Maria R. Papiez, AIA, LEED GA

Maria R. Papiez came to the profession of architecture by way of biology and environmental science. She is passionate about integrating the natural and built worlds through design that allows people and nature to thrive. Maria is the Director of Sustainable Design for EwingCole, and she focuses on a life-cycle, systems-thinking approach to design process and built-fabric impact. She loves digging into materials optimization for ingredient disclosure and embodied carbon, and supports performance improvement across all types of projects.

ISOSCELES AWARD

Durham County Library

Durham County Library (DCoL) is a regional library system with seven locations that serve more than two million visitors a year. The locations vary from historic properties to new construction, but each requires a clear vision to meet the changing needs of Durham County. Balancing budget, library programs, maintenance, and land stewardship, DCoL strives to create a built environment where quality library services are available to everyone without fee, due, or donation.

DCoL has a long history of working with local design professionals. As a client, they have championed design, sustainability and art at each of their locations. The Library has been, and continues to be, committed to providing outstanding library services to the community and understanding the importance that designers have in creating significant public spaces where that can occur. Through their work with several local firms, including The Freelon Group (now Perkins & Will), Cherry Huffman (now Ratio), and Vines architecture, the library has encouraged designers to create spaces filled with light, openness, and vibrancy. They have asked designers to create indoor and outdoor spaces for programs as well as connecting each library to its community through scale, materials, and in some cases historical exhibits. Sustainability and Public Art have been included on every project with all receiving LEED Certification, and incorporating public art in significant places within and around the buildings
