SUMMARY:Live Webinar - Commissioning 101 - Industry Guidelines
DESCRIPTION:AIA Triangle Virtual Lunch Program \nSponsored by \n \nCommissioning 101 – Industry Guidelines \nThursday\, October 15 | 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm | 1 HSW  \nAIA Triangle Members/AIA Triangle Annual Partners/Students: $0 | Non Members: $35 \n\nOnline program registration required\nDeadline to register 10:00 am on October 15\nZoom meeting link will be mailed to registrants on the morning of the program\n\n\nThe word “Commissioning” has different meanings to different parties involved in the design and construction process. A question frequently asked by owners new to the commissioning process is\, “Don’t I already pay for that?”. In this session we will review commissioning according to the industry standard ASHRAE Commissioning Guidelines and North Carolina Energy Code. We will identify when commissioning should start and end\, the steps in between\, why it is needed in today’s business environment\, the value to the owner\, and the cost of commissioning. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nParticipants will be able to define building commissioning according to the industry standard ASHRAE Commissioning\nGuidelines and North Carolina Energy Code\nParticipants will be able to identify why commissioning is needed\nParticipants will be able to summarize the steps involved in the commissioning process\nParticipants will be able to recognize the cost of commissioning and the value to the owner\n\nPRESENTED BY \n \nJohn Mathews\, P.E. \nA Principal and Mechanical Engineer at Optima Engineering\, John Mathews has extensive experience designing mechanical systems for commercial\, residential\, educational\, medical\, and governmental facilities. John excels in identifying and understanding client perspectives\, translating their vision into reality\, and finding effective and practical solutions to the most complex building designs. \n  \n

SUMMARY:COTE Getting to Net Zero: Integrative Design: Tracking Operational and Embodied Carbon
DESCRIPTION:AIAT COMMITTEE ON THE ENVIRONMENT (COTE) PRESENTS \nGETTING TO NET ZERO DESIGN LECTURE SERIES \n \nLecture 2: Integrative Design: Tracking Operational and Embodied Carbon \nTuesday\, October 20 | 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm | 1.5 HSW \nAIA Members/AIAT Annual Partners/Students: $0 | Non Members: $35 \n\nOnline program – registration required\nDeadline to register is 10:00 am on October 20th\nLink to Zoom meeting will be emailed to registrants on the morning of the program\n\n\nINTEGRATIVE DESIGN: TRACKING OPERATIONAL AND EMBODIED CARBON \nSPEAKERS: Anne Schopf\, FAIA (Mahlum); Ale Menchaca\, PhD. (Thornton Tomasetti) \nWe’ve come a long way in learning how to design high performance buildings with low operational carbon emissions. Our next challenge is to build buildings with the lowest embodied carbon possible. Sometimes aligned and sometimes at odds\, this session will provide an overview of how to lead a high-performance integrative design process\, establish high performance goals\, track energy and sustainable design goals\, and achieve a low emissions building by evaluating opportunities and tradeoffs for reducing operational and embodied carbon.  \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \nParticipants will assess challenge of what it means to get to net zero for both operational carbon and embodied carbon and how project leadership and management plays a key role in addressing the challenge. \nParticipants will analyze the integrative design process and how to successfully lead a design process for tracking metrics for high-performance projects. \nParticipants will assess various case studies and examine how integrative design is being used to reduce both operational and embodied carbon throughout the design process. \nParticipants will examine case studies and determine how to lead a successful integrative design process and the key project management strategies that helped maximize the performance.

SUMMARY:COTE Getting to Net Zero: Reducing Embodied Carbon Through Material Specs and Mass Timber Structures
DESCRIPTION:AIAT COMMITTEE ON THE ENVIRONMENT (COTE) PRESENTS \nGETTING TO NET ZERO DESIGN LECTURE SERIES \n \nWorkshop 3: Reducing Embodied Carbon Through \nMaterial Specifications and Mass Timber Structures \nTuesday\, October 27 | 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm| 1.5 HSW \nAIA Members/AIAT Annual Partners/Students: $0 | Non Members: $35 \n\nOnline program – registration required\nDeadline to register is 10:00 am on October 27th\nLink to Zoom meeting will be emailed to registrants on the morning of the program\n\n\nREDUCING EMBODIED CARBON THROUGH MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS AND MASS TIMBER STRUCTURES \nSPEAKERS: Anne Hicks\, FAIA\, LEED Fellow (Long Green Specs);  Bruce Lindsey (Woodworks) \nIn order for architects to have the greatest impact on climate change over the next 10 years\, how we specify building materials and design our structural systems to lower embodied carbon will be as important if not more than lowering operational carbon. This session will focus primarily on design strategies to reduce a building’s embodied carbon through the specification of building materials. The lecture will show best practices for building specifications of interior and exterior materials and how to specify products that have EPD’s and are healthy and low in embodied carbon. The lecture will also reveal the importance of the design of the structural system for reducing the embodied carbon with an emphasis on how to design and specify mass timber systems. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \nParticipants will recognize the importance of reducing a building’s embodied carbon through the specification of interior and exterior building materials. \nParticipants will derive the best practices for specifying materials that have a low embodied carbon and which building systems and materials will have the greatest impact on reducing the building’s overall embodied carbon. \nParticipants will assess the importance of the design of the structural system on reducing the embodied carbon and some of the advantages of using a mass timber structure. \nParticipants will discover the basics of how to design and specify mass timber structural systems including CLT systems and some of the strategies for selecting the most appropriate mass timber frame system for the building type.
