SUMMARY:Virtual Joint Lecture - Carla Swickerath\, Design Awards Jury Chair
DESCRIPTION:Carla Swickerath \nPartner\, Studio Libeskind\, New York \nDesign Impact\, Creating Community\, Building Culture and Memory\, and Public Space \nRobert P. Burns Lecture | AIA Triangle Design Awards Jury Chair \nTuesday\, April 13\, 2021| 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm | 1 LU credit \n\nArchitecture is a language that communicates a story – it can inspire\, commemorate\, even create community\, but it always reflects contemporary culture. Design is only one part of the building process. Architecture is a public art with incredible power and between the concept to the realization – for a museum\, a master plan or affordable housing\, there are a multitude of factors that impact the outcome. The designer’s role in navigating the process and interests of the various stakeholders is to listen and to synthesize the voices while staying true to the greater vision for the project and the importance of its role in shaping the future. Carla Swickerath will explore the currents that impact architecture and building through the lens of a few of Studio Libeskind’s seminal projects including the rebuilding of the World Trade Center in New York and the Contemporary Jewish Museum San Francisco\, among others.\n\nCarla Swickerath\, Partner\, Studio Libeskind\, New York: Since joining Studio Libeskind in 1999\, Carla Swickerath has gained diverse experience in cultural\, civic\, retail\, commercial\, residential and planning projects around the world. She has lead many of the Studio’s successful project teams from concept design through to completion—including the Crystals retail complex at CityCenter in Las Vegas\, the Hyundai Haeundae Udong I-Park residential development in Busan\, Korea\, and the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco.\n\nMs. Swickerath has also led the complex World Trade Center redevelopment process from the initial competition phase to the present. Today\, her dual management and design skills come into play as she oversees all aspects of operations at Studio Libeskind. Ms. Swickerath leads many of the Studio’s projects\, coordinating the design team and consultants\, liaising with clients and client’s representatives and managing project budgets and schedules.\n\nShe earned a Masters in Architecture from the University of Michigan\, following undergraduate studies in English and Art History at the University of Florida. She has taught at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee in Berlin and University of Michigan. Carla speaks publicly on architecture\, design and planning. Carla is a member of the Board of Trustees at the Van Alen Institute in New York.\n\n\nOnline program – RSVP required for continuing education credit\nDeadline to register is 10:00 am on Monday\, April 13\, 2021\nZoom meeting link will be emailed to registrants the day of the program
