This is the annual Paul Tesar lecture. \nMauricio Rocha founded his practice in Mexico City in 1991\, and was shortlisted for the AR Emerging awards in 2009 for the School of Plastic Arts in Oaxaca. Since then\, Rocha has designed buildings around Mexico\, many in collaboration with the architect Gabriela Carrillo\, who was a partner at the practice between 2012 and 2019. Projects include the Centro de Invidentes y Débiles Visuales (Centre for the Blind and Visually Impaired) in 2001 – and the renovation of a library on the site in with Carrillo in 2015 – the Pátzcuaro Criminal Courts from 2015\, a brick studio for Rocha’s mother in 2016\, and most recently the extension of the Museo Anahuacalli in Mexico City.

The first focuses on alternative histories of architecture and\, in particular\, the interrelationship of a culture’s architecture and its cultural/religious beliefs. Professor Barrie’s scholarship on the symbolism\, ritual use\, and cultural significance of architecture has brought him to sacred places around the world\, and he has published and lectured extensively on this subject area.

In the College of Architecture\, she teaches design studios and seminar courses in digital fabrication and representation. She is the co-director of Van Dyck Murphy Studio\, a multidisciplinary architecture and design collaborative based in St. Louis\, Missouri. The practice engages in built and speculative projects at the scales of objects\, installations\, and environments\, focusing on work that explores materiality\, craft\, and experiential narratives. Recently\, Van Dyck Murphy studio was among the winning designers for the Alleyway Project\, an international public art competition that will result in the re-envisioning of an alleyway in downtown Ann Arbor\, Michigan. They are also in the process of designing and fabricating a ceramic 3D-printed masonry screen wall in downtown St. Louis. Recent work has been exhibited at the Des Lee Gallery\, the Sheldon\, and the Farrell Learning Center.

Peter will discuss the influence of some of the nation’s leading African American designers—from Abele’s remarkable legacy to the talented J. Max Bond\, Jr.— that has helped shape his own career and aesthetic. His own award-winning projects include transformative\, enduring designs that celebrate individuals and their communities\, such as the unparalleled Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington DC. Through his work\, he seeks to create spaces for arts\, civic\, cultural\, and community-based institutions that transcend boundaries\, explore diverse contexts\, histories\, and cultures\, and encourage greater inquiry\, empathy\, connection and understanding. \nJoin the AIA Triangle Women in Architecture as they host a networking reception at 5:30 pm prior to the lecture. Light food and beverages will be provided. \nPETER D. COOK\, FAIA\, NOMA | PRINCIPAL | HGA ARCHITECTS & ENGINEERS \nPeter D. Cook\, FAIA\, NOMA is an architect based in Washington\, D.C.\, where he is a design principal at HGA Architects & Engineers. His current work at HGA includes such projects as the new Lamond-Riggs Neighborhood Library\, the Northern Virginia Science Center\, the Connecticut Center for Arts and Technology\, and the Contemplative Site at Monticello in Charlottesville\, Virginia. Prior to HGA\, Peter’s work included many prominent civic\, cultural\, and institutional projects in and around Washington\, including the design collaboration for the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture\, as well as the Watha T. Daniel/Shaw Neighborhood Library\, the Middle East Institute\, the Gateway DC Pavilion at the St. Elizabeths campus\, and the modernization and expansion of the South African Embassy.
