This is necessary to: meet the clients’ requirements\, comply with relevant standards\, achieve design coherence and then a high performance and safe building. Collaboration involves the design disciplines working together\, sharing knowledge\, learning from each other\, and\, by that\, designing a building informed by professional inputs and consensus. Collaboration also involves acknowledging that elements may change and design development is not only inevitable\, but desirable. This course will explore the Engineering side of project design and implementation to help build a better looking project. Engineers will share past experiences and common coordination issues to help head off these issues earlier in the design process rather than during construction when they would be more costly to fix. Typical coordination issues can range from above ceiling items\, like Mechanical and Plumbing\, to room facing Electrical\, Technology\, and Fire Protection systems. This Lunch & Learn is being offered in-person and virtually. Registration details below. \n \n\n\nLEARNING OBJECTIVES\n\n\n\n\nAttendees will explore the engineering side of projects for each discipline and better understand how the design focus for those disciplines impacts the overall project. \nAttendees will explore the necessary clearances for equipment and why this should be addressed early in design. \nAttendees will review various code requirements and understand why those requirements are necessary. \nThe presenters will share past experiences and list some of the most common coordination issues that appear in projects. SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn - Embodied Carbon as a Performance Metric
DESCRIPTION:AIA Triangle Lunch & Learn Program \nSponsored by \n \n\n\n\nEmbodied Carbon as a Performance Metric\n\n\nThursday\, November 10\, 2022 | 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM | 1 AIA LU/HSW\n\n\nOption to attend in-person or online via Zoom\n\n\nCenter for Architecture & Design | 14 E. Peace Street | Raleigh\, NC\n\n\nLunch will be provided for in-person attendees\n\n\n(Deadline for in-person registration: Wednesday\, November 9 at 10:00 am)\n\n\n\n\nREGISTRATION OPTIONS \nZOOM REGISTRATION ONLY – Register HERE to attend online and receive Zoom link \nIN-PERSON REGISTRATION \n\nAIA Members/AIA Triangle Annual Partners: $0 (RSVP BELOW)\nNon-Members: $35 (PURCHASE TICKET BELOW)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe topic of embodied carbon in the AEC industry has become a critical issue. Buildings alone account for 40% of the global greenhouse gas emissions. Two-thirds of that total impact is from operational emissions while the remainder is from embodied emissions. Embodied emissions include all the emissions required to produce everything that goes into our buildings – the structure\, enclosure and all the materials inside. Historically\, the focus in the design community has been on reducing operational emissions since they represent the majority of the total impact. In response\, the AEC community has been able to reduce operational emissions in the built environment through designing smarter buildings\, as a result the recent focus has shifted to the other one-third of the pie\, embodied carbon. In response to a new focus on embodied carbon\, the USGBC included a new credit under the materials section\, Building Life-Cycle Impact Reduction\, where there is an option to perform a Whole Building Lifecycle Assessment (WBLCA) worth a total of 3 points in v4 and 4 points in LEED v4.1. The goal of the WBLCA is to reduce the embodied impacts of a building by quantifying the environmental impacts of structure and enclosure. This course provides an overview of embodied carbon\, the role that structural engineers play in the sustainable design process\, how design teams can measure and minimize carbon impacts in building systems\, and an understanding of how sustainable structural design integrates with other building systems to reduce overall impact. We will also review Whole Building Life Cycle Assessment and LEED v4 through a recent case study. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nRecognize how different materials contribute to the overall embodied environmental impacts of the structural system\nIdentify design tools to measure embodied carbon\nRecognize which strategies are most effective for minimizing the embodied impacts of construction materials\nCompare the embodied impacts of structural systems to the impacts of building operations\n\n\n\n\nPRESENTED BY \nKelly Roberts\, P.E.\, S.E.\, LEED AP BD+C and Matt O’Callaghan\, PE\, SE \nKelly Roberts is a Principal and Senior Structural Project Manager at Walter P Moore Atlanta. Roberts leads Walter P Moore’s Sustainable Design Community of Practice and is a founding board member of the non-profit material reuse center\, Lifecycle Building Center.  She is founding chair of the NCSEA Sustainability Committee and co-chair of the Atlanta Carbon Leadership Forum. SUMMARY:Continuing Education & Happy Hour - Exterior Skin Principles
DESCRIPTION:AIA Triangle Continuing Ed & Happy Hour \nSponsored by\n \n \n\n\n\nExterior Skin Principles (1 AIA LU)\n\n\nHappy Hour refreshments will be served following continuing ed. program\n\n\nTuesday\, October 18\, 2022 \n\n\n4:00 PM – 5:00 PM: CE Program | 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM Plant Tour & Happy Hour\n\n\nAttend in person only (no Zoom option)\n\n\nAdvanced Exterior Systems | 4501 Beryl Road | Raleigh\, NC\n\n\n(Deadline for in-person registration: Monday\, October 17th at 10:00 am)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn order to get the most out of our buildings we must consider factors like water control and thermal movement. It’s also critical to consider the environment in our designs; we can use material selection and panel sizing to help benefit the surrounding world for a more sustainable future. Buildings must also be visually appealing. In this presentation\, we will explore how to take material that is seemingly boring square metal and transform it into something stunning. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nParticipants will discover how insulation impacts thermal movement. There are many types of insulation for sale\, and we will cover the material makeup\, advantages\, and disadvantages of the main types. It’s also important to note how insulation works to make it more efficient. The thickness of the material interacts with air and slows down the transfer of heat. We will also discuss the materials adjacent to the insulation impact the building properties. This is a property called thermal movement and is just as important as the insulation itself\n\n  \n\nParticipants will discover how to keep a building weathertight while also allowing it to breathe. The general thought process is that the roof and walls keep the building weathertight. Now while that is inherently true\, the weatherproofing behind the exterior walls is often overlooked. These air and vapor barriers are used in most exterior skin applications but often ignored. Certain materials work better in certain situations and climates. Not only does the building need to stay watertight\, but these barriers must allow air to pass through to keep the building materials dry\n\n  \n\nParticipants will explore how we skin a building while being kind to the environment. Each material impacts the environment in a different way. We will also discuss yield of materials and how the design can either negatively impact or positively impact the environment. Designing a system with material\, sizing\, location\, and color in mind can always be beneficial to the environment\n\n  \n\nParticipants will determine how we can utilize materials to create an aesthetically pleasing exterior skin.\n\n\n\n\nPRESENTED BY \nDom Golia\, Account/Sales Executive\, Advanced Exterior Systems \nDom is the account executive for the Charlotte market. His focus is on working with architects and general contractors to get the best skin on the building as possible while conforming to price and design limitations\n\n\n\nIN-PERSON REGISTRATION ONLY – REGISTER BELOW \n\nRegister below to attend in-person\nDeadline for registration is Monday\, October 17 at 10:00 am\nHappy hour refreshments will be served following the program\nThe program will begin promptly at 4:00 PM\nRegistration begins at 3:30 PM – Please arrive early to allow time for check-in\nFace masks are optional
