SUMMARY:Continuing Education & Happy Hour - Exterior Skin Principles
DESCRIPTION:AIA Triangle Continuing Ed & Happy Hour \nSponsored by\n \n \n\n\n\nExterior Skin Principles (1 AIA LU)\n\n\nHappy Hour refreshments will be served following continuing ed. program\n\n\nTuesday\, October 18\, 2022 \n\n\n4:00 PM – 5:00 PM: CE Program | 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM Plant Tour & Happy Hour\n\n\nAttend in person only (no Zoom option)\n\n\nAdvanced Exterior Systems | 4501 Beryl Road | Raleigh\, NC\n\n\n(Deadline for in-person registration: Monday\, October 17th at 10:00 am)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn order to get the most out of our buildings we must consider factors like water control and thermal movement. It’s also critical to consider the environment in our designs; we can use material selection and panel sizing to help benefit the surrounding world for a more sustainable future. Buildings must also be visually appealing. In this presentation\, we will explore how to take material that is seemingly boring square metal and transform it into something stunning. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nParticipants will discover how insulation impacts thermal movement. There are many types of insulation for sale\, and we will cover the material makeup\, advantages\, and disadvantages of the main types. It’s also important to note how insulation works to make it more efficient. The thickness of the material interacts with air and slows down the transfer of heat. We will also discuss the materials adjacent to the insulation impact the building properties. This is a property called thermal movement and is just as important as the insulation itself\n\n  \n\nParticipants will discover how to keep a building weathertight while also allowing it to breathe. The general thought process is that the roof and walls keep the building weathertight. Now while that is inherently true\, the weatherproofing behind the exterior walls is often overlooked. These air and vapor barriers are used in most exterior skin applications but often ignored. Certain materials work better in certain situations and climates. Not only does the building need to stay watertight\, but these barriers must allow air to pass through to keep the building materials dry\n\n  \n\nParticipants will explore how we skin a building while being kind to the environment. Each material impacts the environment in a different way. We will also discuss yield of materials and how the design can either negatively impact or positively impact the environment. Designing a system with material\, sizing\, location\, and color in mind can always be beneficial to the environment\n\n  \n\nParticipants will determine how we can utilize materials to create an aesthetically pleasing exterior skin.\n\n\n\n\nPRESENTED BY \nDom Golia\, Account/Sales Executive\, Advanced Exterior Systems \nDom is the account executive for the Charlotte market. His focus is on working with architects and general contractors to get the best skin on the building as possible while conforming to price and design limitations\n\n\n\nIN-PERSON REGISTRATION ONLY – REGISTER BELOW \n\nRegister below to attend in-person\nDeadline for registration is Monday\, October 17 at 10:00 am\nHappy hour refreshments will be served following the program\nThe program will begin promptly at 4:00 PM\nRegistration begins at 3:30 PM – Please arrive early to allow time for check-in\nFace masks are optional

This is not done intentionally\, rather\, it is a by-product of the lack of coordination\, and fundamental understanding\, between those involved with the structural elements and those involved with the aesthetic and finishing elements. During this presentation\, we will discuss sustainability and what it means; drawing the attendee into a clear discussion of how sustainability relates to LEED\, Lean Construction\, Green Building\, and process improvement. Inconsistencies with current specification processes related to concrete moisture as compared to the tenets of sustainability will be exposed\, with clear recommendations given as to how the specifying professional can resolve these disconnects. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nIdentify the fundamental characteristics of sustainable design\nIdentify the fundamental characteristics of sustainable design and examine the sustainable aspects of concrete as a building material\nEvaluate the current approach for testing concrete moisture against the principles of sustainability\nImplement procedures that indemnify the specifying professional against failed project timelines/cost overruns and failed flooring due to moisture.\n\n\n\n\nPRESENTED BY \nMike Nichols\, Southeast Regional Manager\, ISE Logik Industries \nA North Carolina native\, UT alum\, Mike has served in various sales/specifier roles for 35 years for several flooring manufacturers\, large and small.\n\n\n\nZOOM REGISTRATIONS ONLY – Register HERE to attend online and receive Zoom link \nIN-PERSON REGISTRATION – REGISTER BELOW \n\nRegister below to attend in-person\nDeadline for in-person registration is Monday\, September 26 at 10:00 am\nLunch will be provided to in-person registrants\nThe program will begin promptly at 12:00 PM\nRegistration begins at 11:30 AM – Please arrive early to allow time for check-in and lunch\nFace masks are optional

SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn: Integration of Acoustic Control in Lighting Fixtures
DESCRIPTION:AIA Triangle Virtual Lunch & Learn Program \nSponsored by \n \nIntegration of Acoustic Control in Lighting Fixtures  \nJune 22 | 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm | 1 LU/HSW \nContemporary interior design has led to an increase in open spaces\, unfinished ceilings\, glass walls and hard flooring. With an increase in design of spaces having unfinished ceilings\, hard ceilings\, and glass walls\, spaces can become loud and noisy for occupants and that distraction decreases productivity\, employee morale\, and customer satisfaction.  By addressing the acoustics in a space\, the design intent can be achieved while also providing a more appealing environment for those in the space. This presentation will provide information about how the integration of acoustic control in lighting fixtures can be part of the solution. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \nParticipants will assess the effects of noise in the workplace \nParticipants will discover the basics of acoustics \nParticipants will determine the quality of sound environment \nParticipants will determine effective integration of acoustic control in lighting fixture design \nPRESENTED BY \nScott Stetler\, Architectural Specification Manager\, Eureka Lighting \nScott Stetler is the Architectural Specification Manager at Eureka Lighting / Acuity Brands for the Eastern US region.  Scott holds a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Design from Purdue University\, located in West Lafayette\, Indiana. Scott has 30+ years of experience in the commercial architectural lighting field and that experience includes extensive knowledge of the distribution side of the lighting industry\, as well as being a manufacturers’ representative for 20+ years\, and regional sales manager for over 12 years.  Scott was previously certified as an AIA Passport Provider while employed by Lightolier in New York City\, where he conducted AIA presentations to top tier design firms and IALD Lighting Designers.  Scott has been awarded an IES Section Award for the Capitol Products project he designed located in Kentland\, Indiana and has served as a guest design critic at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn\, NY in conjunction with the lighting designer Markus Early. \n  \n\n\nOnline program registration required for continuing education credit\nAIA members and AIA Triangle Annual Partners: $0 | Non-members: $25\nZoom link will be emailed to registrants the morning of the program\nDeadline to register is 10:00 am on June 22nd
