This course discusses the basics of heat transfer\, relevant energy code provisions for walls\, and how current research by the National Brick Research Center demonstrates the role that brick veneer can play in meeting or exceeding energy requirements in modern wall assemblies. \nLearning Objectives \n\nIndicate how wall assemblies have changed throughout history and identify the thermal performance contribution of each component in the assembly.\nDescribe the impact of thermal mass\, vented airspace\, and reflective insulation on energy usage and code requirements.\nExplain the differences in the code compliance paths and how mass walls\, frame walls\, and vented claddings are considered by the energy code.\nCompare the dynamic thermal performance of wall assemblies with anchored brick veneer to wall assemblies with other claddings based on the results of contemporary research.\n\nPresented by \nZach Booker\, EIT\, Engineer\, Brick Industry Association \nAfter graduating from James Madison University in 2016 with a BS in Engineering\, Zach joined the BIA Engineering & Research (E&R) Team. The presentation will also help the design and construction community inform their clients\, such as building owners and facility managers\, on how to provide a safe working environment for all building occupants. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES: \n\nParticipants will be able to review their current building/facility operation and compare to current CDC and OSHA guidelines. The participants can evaluate how their staff reacts to the implementation of these guidelines.\nParticipants will be able to review their current building/facility systems and compare to ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force recommendations. The participants can evaluate how their building maintenance and facilities groups implements these  procedures into their standard maintenance procedures.\nParticipants will be able to assess their client’s buildings and facilities with these guidelines and provide recommendations.  The participants can evaluate how many of their clients choose follow these recommendations at their buildings and facilities.\nThe participants will be able to differentiate between the Epidemic Operating Conditions in Place (ECiP) and Post-Epidemic Operating Conditions in Plance (P-ECip) through the ASHRAE Epidemic Task force.  The participants can evaluate how their internal staff as well as clients implement these recommendations and procedures within their buildings and facilities.\n\nPRESENTED BY: \nJohn Quiocho\, PE\, LEED AP\, Sr. Associate \nMr. Quiocho is a Mechanical Engineer with 22 years experience in HVAC and plumbing system design and project management. His experience includes designing and managing public building projects. He holds a BS in Construction Engineering with a concentration in mechanical construction from NC State University. \nIn his fourteen years at EDi\, Mr. Quiocho has managed 175+ projects. His experience with EDi includes corporate projects\, laboratory projects\, K-12 projects\, community college as well as university projects. Additionally\, he has worked with state agencies including NC Department of Administration and NC Department of Transportation as well as completed projects within several local municipalities. His project management experience includes managing a team of engineers for project coordination\, time management and project budgets through design and construction phases.

He has over 30 years of experience in analysis and design of structural systems for commercial\, residential\, industrial\, and institutional buildings\, working with multi-discipline teams. His work has often involved alteration and additions to existing buildings\, as well as new construction. Specific experience includes: Development of laser scanning and BIM protocols for existing building investigations; design of structural steel\, masonry\, reinforced concrete\, prestressed concrete\, structural wood\, and cold formed metal systems; and analysis and design of retaining walls and shallow and deep foundations. We analyze the role circadian light and perceived open space play in shaping cognitive function\, as well as how our psycho-physiology changes in interior environments. \nWe discuss a new approach that proposes the restorative value of perceived open space in its two essential orientations: perceived zenith and perceived horizon line. In contrast to how we perceive these spatial reference frames outdoors\, in enclosed interiors where such reference frames are often not visible\, we can stage architectural cues to alter our perception of interior space. Restoring these spatial reference frames through a valid multisensory illusion restores a range of wellness benefits normally associated with interiors applying biophilic design principles. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nDiscuss how and why isolating the qualities of light—intensity and color temperature—from their natural medium\, the sky\, has a profound effect on perception: Light loses its spatial attributes as an organic connection to nature.\nDefine the role Circadian Photoreceptors play in regulating circadian function and why the environmental context in which our physiology detects circadian light—in open\, natural space—may play a fundamental role in generating a restorative effect.\nDescribe how our sensorimotor system and our memory share the same wetware (neural pathways) to perceive and map out our environment\, making our memory a neural repository of spatial reference frames.\nSummarize the malleable nature of human perception and how multisensory illusions can be designed in architectural settings\, transforming how our physiology experiences the built environment.\nExplain the implications of deep plan buildings on human health and productivity and how biophilic design technologies minimize their deleterious impact.\n\nPRESENTED BY: \nGeof Northridge\, Marketing\, Product Presentations\, and Continuing Education Instructor \nMr. Northridge has extensive experience in both commercial real estate and the commercial construction industry.  For the past seven years he has been developing and presenting continuing education courses on topics including the effects of biophilic design elements on human physiology\, how biophilic illusions can be created to provide many of the same physiological benefits as actual biophilic design elements\, and how knowledge of the mechanics of human perception can be paired with carefully crafted illusions of nature to alter how humans experience interior spaces.  He has presented Sky Factory’s various AIA-approved continuing education courses more than 400 times to architectural and design firms as well as to AIA chapter meetings and other events.
