SUMMARY:Innovation in Mass Timber Solutions (IMTS) Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Innovation in Mass Timber Solutions (IMTS) is a two-day conference that will gather experts from across industry and academia\, to provide an experience that engages participants in the exploration of the development and application of mass timber and cross laminated timber. This conference provides an opportunity to bridge industry and academia to come together to develop a road map for an initiative in innovation in wood education. Featuring a field tour\, expert presentations\, small group activities\, and discussions\, IMTS will engage attendees in the exploration of the development and application of mass timber solutions. \nDuring the field tour\, participants will watch a demonstration of engineering and mechanical testing of cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels at NC State’s Constructed Facilities Lab\, visit sites–including JC Raulston Arboretum–with heavy timber construction\, and learn about growing timber by visiting a managed forest (Schenck Forest). This event will cater to the diverse interests of academics\, architects and designers\, builders\, forestry professionals\, industry\, manufacturers\, municipalities\, and others. \nIf you are interested in submitting a poster to promote your work/projects\, click here. \nCredit pending. \nClick here to register.  (Registration closes October 13\, 2024.)

SUMMARY:Meeting your Design and Performance Requirements - Lunch & Learn
DESCRIPTION:Meeting your Design and Performance Requirements with Pultruded Fiberglass Windows and Doors\nbrought to you by American Cedar & Millwork \nThis course will familiarize you with the basic aspects of fiberglass composites\, with a specific emphasis on pultruded fiberglass.  By examining the performance characteristics\, durability and numerous environmental advantages of pultruded fiberglass\, the course will outline the advantages of windows and doors made from pultruded fiberglass and use case studies to demonstrate applications across a wide variety of multi-family and commercial build environments where sustainability\, durability and human experience are prioritized. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDiscuss how composite materials provide predictable\, sustainable and superior performance characteristics over other materials.\nExplain the production of fiberglass composites and the advantages of the pultrusion process from a manufacturing and environmental perspective\nIdentify the performance characteristics of windows and doors made from pultruded fiberglass and how they help meet the latest design trends that maximize light\, air and views for building-user well-being\nDiscuss finishes\, AAMA certification and energy efficiency for pultruded fiberglass windows and doors\nExplore case studies of pultruded fiberglass windows and doors in various projects for performance\, resiliency\, and sustainability.\n\nCE Credit: 1 LU/HSW\nHSW Justification:\nThis new course is virtually identical to our PULFIBER19 which was approved for HSW designation. The learning objectives have largely remained the same but the case studies are updated and new for this version. As a composite\, pultruded fiberglass is long-lasting\, durable\, high performing\, and stable – all of which are positive aspects as a material used in windows and doors. The course content demonstrates how theses physical aspects of the windows and doors impact the well-being of the building occupants such as consistent operability of windows and doors to let in fresh air\, large sizes to access views and outdoor spaces\, strength of locking mechanisms for safety\, and quality materials used in the window frames. Whether used in multi-family residential or other commercial buildings\, newly constructed or remodeled\, windows and doors made from pultruded fiberglass are resilient and provide many environmental advantages to the build environment.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for Namasit-Namastay\, a Triangle Barkitecture Yoga Event presented by Fenton and benefiting Hope Animal Rescue. Get ready for Barkitecture the following week by joining us for a yoga class starting at 10am at Fenton on September 28th. Each $15 donation covers your spot for the class and includes your very own yoga mat from Fenton. All proceeds from the event will be donated to Hope Animal rescue to help find homes for dogs here in the Triangle. Class instruction provided by CorePower. \nHope Animal Rescue will also be out with some adoptable puppers who may just get in on some of the downward dog action. Stick around after the class for a meet and greet with some of the adoptable doggos and maybe meet your new best friend to bring to Barkitecture.

SUMMARY:Emerging Technologies Symposium
DESCRIPTION:This half-day event will delve into one of the most transformative topics in architecture today: artificial intelligence (AI). If you’ve been curious\, intrigued\, or even uncertain about how AI may shape the future of design\, this symposium is a must-attend event. This is a hybrid event – you have the option of attending in person at CfAD or attending remotely. \nThe symposium will bring together local and international experts in both virtual and in-person formats. You’ll hear from Des Fagan\, a leading figure from Lancaster University in the UK\, as well as Sara Codarin and Karl Daubman from Lawrence Technological University in Michigan\, who will discuss the real and potential impacts of AI on architecture\, from rapid image generation to design innovation. \nIn addition\, we’ve assembled an in-person panel of local architects who are at the forefront of exploring this technology. Heather Ferell (Prism Design Lab)\, Jessica Pearson (Gensler)\, and Brian Payne (BSA LifeStructures) will share insights on how emerging technologies are transforming their practices. This dynamic discussion will be moderated by Dolly Haardt\, LEED AP and Regional Design Technology Manager with Gensler in Raleigh. You’ll hear firsthand about the practical challenges\, successes\, and future opportunities of integrating new technologies into architectural workflows. \nRounding out the program\, we’ll be joined by Argelia Barcena from AIA San Francisco\, who will share how their chapter has navigated the evolving tech landscape and embraced new tools to enhance workflow\, collaboration\, and design outcomes. \nMembers: $35\nNonmembers: $65\n4 LU credits \nSchedule:\n1:00pm     \nHow AI Will Impact the Architecture Profession\nDes Fagan\, Head of Architecture\, Lancaster University\, UK \n2:00pm \nAI Sketching with Rapid Image Generation\nInteractive presentation with Sara Codarin & Karl Daubmann\, College of Architecture & Design\, Lawrence Technological University \n3:00pm\nPanel Discussion\nLive discussion with local architects:\nHeather Ferrell\, AIA\, NOMA\, SEED\, Executive Director\, Prism Design Lab\nJessica Pearson\, AIA\, LEED AP\, Strategy Lead\, Associate\, Gensler\nBrian Payne\, Senior Architect\, Technical Delivery Lead\, BSA Lifestructures \n4:00pm\nCase study of a thriving technology task force\nArgelia Barcena\, Women in BIM Regional Lead\, Gensler\, AIA San Francisco Technology in Architecture Practice \n5:00pm  \nNetworking Social and Q&A following the program\nInterested in launching a Technology Knowledge Network at AIA Triangle? SUMMARY:Designing with Pedestrian Scale Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Presented by KB Stephens: \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThis is a detailed and thorough course designed to take anyone of any background and provide them a strong knowledge and a toolset of best practices for designing with pedestrian scale solutions. In the world of lighting\, pedestrian scale solutions are primarily bollards\, building elements\, and pole-top luminaires. These critical solutions enable any designer to create safe\, comfortable\, and functional spaces for people\, and more specifically pedestrians. To effectively achieve this mission critical task\, one needs to understand the terminology\, product characteristics\, manufacturing considerations\, design challenges\, available options\, and safety requirements. \nThis is a hybrid event. Lunch will be provided for those attending in person. Please provide attendee email at registration for Zoom details.  \nJuly 30\, 2024\n12:00pm – 1:00pm\nCenter for Architecture and Design\n14 E.
