Participants will develop an understanding of what federal inspectors and attorneys will be focusing on in their inspections of residential (Fair Housing Act Accessibility Guidelines) and Commercial (2010 ADA Standards)\, as well as develop an understanding of what changes can be anticipated in state and federal accessibility requirements and when these changes will go into effect. \n\nUpon completion of this program\, participants will identify and develop an understanding of what serial plaintiffs are looking for in their drive-by inspections of commercial occupancy.\nParticipants will determine the most common items that are missed in design and construction resulting in violations of accessibility requirements.\nParticipants will understand the differences of the new North Carolina Building Code and its impact on Commercial Occupancies.\nParticipants will discover how the Accessibility Requirements of Federal 2010 ADA Standards; The North Carolina Building code and its Accessibility Standard A117.1 2009 apply to their projects. Participants will further derive what changes that they can anticipate in the 2017 edition of the A117.1 standards.\n\n\nDominic Martinelli\, Vice President\, Accessibility Services \nDominic Marinelli has been with the United Spinal Association for over 30 years. Mr. Marinelli provides continuing education to members of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Society of American Registered Architects (SARA). He is a Contract Instructor for the International Codes Council (ICC) and an Adjunct Faculty Member at Pratt’s Center for Continuing & Professional Studies in New York City.\n  \nMr. Marinelli is a certified Accessibility Specialist/Plans Examiner by the International Code Council and serves on various committees including American National Standard Institute Residential Committee which he serves as Chair. This district will be at the core of growth in Raleigh\, working to tie innovation and history together. Raleigh Iron Works utilizes two existing\, structurally unique warehouses and reimagines them into something new for locals and visitors alike to enjoy. Potential uses include restaurant\, retail\, office\, residential\, and more. Highly experienced in complex and large-scale commercial projects\, Christy is skilled at managing both new construction and upfits within existing shell space. She is adept at balancing upfit and shell schedules\, coordinating equipment\, and navigating tenant and leasing requirements. Christy has developed a reputation for providing win-win solutions to the challenges that may arise between project stakeholders during the construction process. With AIA’s commitment to the 2030 Challenge (carbon neutrality for all new construction)\, examples of radical sustainability are invaluable. While many architects have embraced the principles of sustainable design over recent years\, Frank has been designing environmentally responsible\, modern buildings for nearly three decades – long before “green architecture” became a part of the general lexicon. Sustainability is the most important architectural issues of our time. As a young architect\, he quickly learned that everything he designed would cause the earth to be stripped or mined. Stunned by that realization\, he knew that the only way he could work as an architect was to promise to make a site better than he found it. Sometimes that meant not building at all. From single-family homes and tiny artists’ studios to corporate headquarters\, commercial educational\, and institutional facilities\, Frank’s practice has gone to great lengths to ensure that the buildings are energy-efficient and environmentally conservative. \nDavid Swanson\, RLA\, ASLA was born in Beirut\, Lebanon. His family moved back to North Carolina when he was a small boy. His first interest was in planning and city management\, but eventually he settled on landscape architecture and graduated with an MLA from North Carolina State University College of Design in 1983. Swanson worked at Lewis Clarke Associates (LCA) when the first master plan for the North Carolina Zoo was developed as well as during the Fayetteville Street Mall Project in Raleigh\, NC. In 1988\, Swanson founded his own firm\, Swanson and Associates\, PA. The firm places particular emphasis on careful analysis through the planning process and preparation of creative and innovative solutions using sustainable design practices. The firm staff has over thirty collective years of experience in landscape architecture and planning in both public and private practice\, with particular experience in sustainable site planning and historic preservation issues. David also specializes in the use of native landscapes and natural settings\, and in the adaptive reuse of landscape and hardscape elements. \nSierra Dickerson is the current Facilities and Events Manager for the North Carolina Botanical Gardens. As part of her role\, she manages the ongoing sustainable policies for weddings and catered events at the facility.
