SUMMARY:COTE Fall Symposium - The AIA 2030 Commitment
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n\n\n\nCommittee on the Environment Fall Symposium \nTHE AIA 2030 COMMITMENT \n(4 AIA/LU HSW Credits)\n\n\nWednesday\, September 28 | 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM \n\n\n(Registration Deadline: Tuesday\, September 27 @ 10:00 PM)\n\n\nCenter for Architecture & Design\n\n\n14 E. Peace Street | Raleigh\, NC 27504\n\n\n\n\n\nAIA Members: $50 | ONLY AIA Members with ‘Associate AIA‘ designation: $30\n\n\nNon-AIA Members: $75 | Student $20\n\n\n\nThe AIA 2030 Commitment is an actionable climate strategy that gives us a set of standards and goals for reaching net zero emissions in the built environment. The latest climate data tells us that reducing carbon emissions is not enough. To make the biggest impact\, we must all commit to net zero emissions by 2030—a path that requires strong\, immediate action. Since the built environment creates a staggering 40% of the world’s emissions\, architects\, engineers\, and owners play a key role. Hear from architects representing a variety of firms about their experience with the AIA 2030 Commitment\, the challenges they have faced\, how they have overcome these hurdles\, and what the future looks like to achieve this lofty goal. \n\n\n\nLEARNING OBJECTIVES\n\n\n1) Participants will learn about the need for firms to join the AIA 2030 Commitment and what impact they can personally make in their careers\n\n\n2) Participants will understand the requirements of the AIA 2030 Commitment and how this framework can be utilized by firms at every size and for every project type\n\n\n3) Participants will identify and assess the common barriers to the AIA 2030 Commitment and collaboratively contemplate strategies to overcome these hurdles\n\n\n4) Participants will create an action plan for their firm to join the AIA 2030 Commitment\n\n\n \n\n\nPRESENTED BY \n\n\n\n Chris Hellstern\, AIA\, LFA\, LEED AP\, CDT\n\n\nSenior Architect + Associate | The Miller Hull Partnership\n\n\nChris Hellstern has dedicated his career to progressing sustainability within the built environment. His career has spanned a variety of project types and team roles ranging from LEED to Living Building Challenge certified buildings. This is not done intentionally\, rather\, it is a by-product of the lack of coordination\, and fundamental understanding\, between those involved with the structural elements and those involved with the aesthetic and finishing elements. During this presentation\, we will discuss sustainability and what it means; drawing the attendee into a clear discussion of how sustainability relates to LEED\, Lean Construction\, Green Building\, and process improvement. Inconsistencies with current specification processes related to concrete moisture as compared to the tenets of sustainability will be exposed\, with clear recommendations given as to how the specifying professional can resolve these disconnects. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nIdentify the fundamental characteristics of sustainable design\nIdentify the fundamental characteristics of sustainable design and examine the sustainable aspects of concrete as a building material\nEvaluate the current approach for testing concrete moisture against the principles of sustainability\nImplement procedures that indemnify the specifying professional against failed project timelines/cost overruns and failed flooring due to moisture.\n\n\n\n\nPRESENTED BY \nMike Nichols\, Southeast Regional Manager\, ISE Logik Industries \nA North Carolina native\, UT alum\, Mike has served in various sales/specifier roles for 35 years for several flooring manufacturers\, large and small.\n\n\n\nZOOM REGISTRATIONS ONLY – Register HERE to attend online and receive Zoom link \nIN-PERSON REGISTRATION – REGISTER BELOW \n\nRegister below to attend in-person\nDeadline for in-person registration is Monday\, September 26 at 10:00 am\nLunch will be provided to in-person registrants\nThe program will begin promptly at 12:00 PM\nRegistration begins at 11:30 AM – Please arrive early to allow time for check-in and lunch\nFace masks are optional
