SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn - Preventing Floorcovering Failures through Integrated Design
DESCRIPTION:AIA Triangle Lunch & Learn Program \nSponsored by \n \n\n\n\nPreventing Floorcovering Failures Through Integrated Design\n\n\nThursday\, November 3\, 2022 | 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM | 1 AIA LU/HSW\n\n\nOption to attend in-person or online via Zoom\n\n\nCenter for Architecture & Design | 14 E. Peace Street | Raleigh\, NC\n\n\nLunch will be provided for in-person attendees\n\n\n(Deadline for in-person registration: Wednesday\, November 2 at 10:00 am)\n\n\n\n\nREGISTRATION OPTIONS \nZOOM REGISTRATION ONLY – Register HERE to attend online and receive Zoom link \nIN-PERSON REGISTRATION \n\nAIA Members/AIA Triangle Annual Partners: $0 (RSVP BELOW)\nNon-Members: $35 (PURCHASE TICKET BELOW)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFinish elements such as the floorcovering system have a great impact on the final aesthetics of a structure. Floorcovering specification sections often do not address the compatibility of the floorcovering system with the type of application and intended service use. This is not done intentionally\, rather it is an innate result of a misunderstanding of sufficient compatibilities of the various types of floorcovering systems within their installed environments. During this presentation\, we will discuss published floorcovering systems installation standards and specifications that will aid the attendee in strengthening their 09 Sections to avoid these incompatibilities. In addition\, identification and categorization of various floorcovering system failures\, immediate and latent\, will be presented\, and how to properly prevent these failures from occurring during the design process for a successful floorcovering system installation. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nIdentify the documents that clearly define proper installation of the floorcovering system.\nRecognize the impact of misspecification of floorcovering systems.\nEvaluate the impact of improper floorcovering systems installation.\nSpecify appropriate ambient site conditions to avoid floorcovering system installation failure.\nAvoid floorcovering systems failures through improper/outdated design specifications.\n\n\n\n\nPRESENTED BY \nMike Nuckolls\, Southeast Regional Manager\, ISE Logik \nIndustry veteran Mike Nuckolls has joined ISE Logik to head up sales and client service in the Southeast. Nuckolls started his flooring career with Shaw Industries and held sales management positions in Residential\, Commercial\, and Shaw Contract. Most recently\, he managed sales for FloorFolio Commercial Flooring. \n“Mike brings a deep understanding of the commercial side of the flooring business and the importance proper moisture mitigation plays in successful installations\,” said David Seland\, founder and CEO of ISE Logik. “He is one of the most highly respected and trusted professionals in flooring.”\n\n\n\nZOOM REGISTRATIONS ONLY – Register HERE to attend online and receive Zoom link \nIN-PERSON REGISTRATION – REGISTER BELOW \n\nRegister below to attend in-person\nDeadline for in-person registration is Wednesday\, November 2 at 10:00 am\nLunch will be provided to in-person registrants\nThe program will begin promptly at 12:00 PM\nRegistration begins at 11:30 AM – Please arrive early to allow time for check-in and lunch

SUMMARY:Continuing Education & Happy Hour - Exterior Skin Principles
DESCRIPTION:AIA Triangle Continuing Ed & Happy Hour \nSponsored by\n \n \n\n\n\nExterior Skin Principles (1 AIA LU)\n\n\nHappy Hour refreshments will be served following continuing ed. program\n\n\nTuesday\, October 18\, 2022 \n\n\n4:00 PM – 5:00 PM: CE Program | 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM Plant Tour & Happy Hour\n\n\nAttend in person only (no Zoom option)\n\n\nAdvanced Exterior Systems | 4501 Beryl Road | Raleigh\, NC\n\n\n(Deadline for in-person registration: Monday\, October 17th at 10:00 am)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn order to get the most out of our buildings we must consider factors like water control and thermal movement. It’s also critical to consider the environment in our designs; we can use material selection and panel sizing to help benefit the surrounding world for a more sustainable future. Buildings must also be visually appealing. In this presentation\, we will explore how to take material that is seemingly boring square metal and transform it into something stunning. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nParticipants will discover how insulation impacts thermal movement. There are many types of insulation for sale\, and we will cover the material makeup\, advantages\, and disadvantages of the main types. It’s also important to note how insulation works to make it more efficient. The thickness of the material interacts with air and slows down the transfer of heat. We will also discuss the materials adjacent to the insulation impact the building properties. This is a property called thermal movement and is just as important as the insulation itself\n\n  \n\nParticipants will discover how to keep a building weathertight while also allowing it to breathe. The general thought process is that the roof and walls keep the building weathertight. Now while that is inherently true\, the weatherproofing behind the exterior walls is often overlooked. These air and vapor barriers are used in most exterior skin applications but often ignored. Certain materials work better in certain situations and climates. Not only does the building need to stay watertight\, but these barriers must allow air to pass through to keep the building materials dry\n\n  \n\nParticipants will explore how we skin a building while being kind to the environment. Each material impacts the environment in a different way. We will also discuss yield of materials and how the design can either negatively impact or positively impact the environment. Designing a system with material\, sizing\, location\, and color in mind can always be beneficial to the environment\n\n  \n\nParticipants will determine how we can utilize materials to create an aesthetically pleasing exterior skin.\n\n\n\n\nPRESENTED BY \nDom Golia\, Account/Sales Executive\, Advanced Exterior Systems \nDom is the account executive for the Charlotte market. His focus is on working with architects and general contractors to get the best skin on the building as possible while conforming to price and design limitations\n\n\n\nIN-PERSON REGISTRATION ONLY – REGISTER BELOW \n\nRegister below to attend in-person\nDeadline for registration is Monday\, October 17 at 10:00 am\nHappy hour refreshments will be served following the program\nThe program will begin promptly at 4:00 PM\nRegistration begins at 3:30 PM – Please arrive early to allow time for check-in\nFace masks are optional

The latest climate data tells us that reducing carbon emissions is not enough. To make the biggest impact\, we must all commit to net zero emissions by 2030—a path that requires strong\, immediate action. Since the built environment creates a staggering 40% of the world’s emissions\, architects\, engineers\, and owners play a key role. Hear from architects representing a variety of firms about their experience with the AIA 2030 Commitment\, the challenges they have faced\, how they have overcome these hurdles\, and what the future looks like to achieve this lofty goal. \n\n\n\nLEARNING OBJECTIVES\n\n\n1) Participants will learn about the need for firms to join the AIA 2030 Commitment and what impact they can personally make in their careers\n\n\n2) Participants will understand the requirements of the AIA 2030 Commitment and how this framework can be utilized by firms at every size and for every project type\n\n\n3) Participants will identify and assess the common barriers to the AIA 2030 Commitment and collaboratively contemplate strategies to overcome these hurdles\n\n\n4) Participants will create an action plan for their firm to join the AIA 2030 Commitment\n\n\n \n\n\nPRESENTED BY \n\n\n\n Chris Hellstern\, AIA\, LFA\, LEED AP\, CDT\n\n\nSenior Architect + Associate | The Miller Hull Partnership\n\n\nChris Hellstern has dedicated his career to progressing sustainability within the built environment. This is not done intentionally\, rather\, it is a by-product of the lack of coordination\, and fundamental understanding\, between those involved with the structural elements and those involved with the aesthetic and finishing elements. During this presentation\, we will discuss sustainability and what it means; drawing the attendee into a clear discussion of how sustainability relates to LEED\, Lean Construction\, Green Building\, and process improvement. Inconsistencies with current specification processes related to concrete moisture as compared to the tenets of sustainability will be exposed\, with clear recommendations given as to how the specifying professional can resolve these disconnects. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nIdentify the fundamental characteristics of sustainable design\nIdentify the fundamental characteristics of sustainable design and examine the sustainable aspects of concrete as a building material\nEvaluate the current approach for testing concrete moisture against the principles of sustainability\nImplement procedures that indemnify the specifying professional against failed project timelines/cost overruns and failed flooring due to moisture.\n\n\n\n\nPRESENTED BY \nMike Nichols\, Southeast Regional Manager\, ISE Logik Industries \nA North Carolina native\, UT alum\, Mike has served in various sales/specifier roles for 35 years for several flooring manufacturers\, large and small.\n\n\n\nZOOM REGISTRATIONS ONLY – Register HERE to attend online and receive Zoom link \nIN-PERSON REGISTRATION – REGISTER BELOW \n\nRegister below to attend in-person\nDeadline for in-person registration is Monday\, September 26 at 10:00 am\nLunch will be provided to in-person registrants\nThe program will begin promptly at 12:00 PM\nRegistration begins at 11:30 AM – Please arrive early to allow time for check-in and lunch\nFace masks are optional
