SUMMARY:Navigating the Inflation Reduction Act: Energy Tax Incentives for Architects and Designers
DESCRIPTION:This comprehensive course delves into the intricate details of the energy tax incentives provided by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)\, with a specific focus on their implications for architects\, designers\, and the built environment. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the various tax credits\, bonuses\, and requirements that can significantly impact project planning\, design decisions\, and financial outcomes. \nThe course begins with an overview of the Alternative Energy Credits under Section 48\, exploring the Investment Tax Credit (ITC) and its applications. Participants will learn about the elective pay option\, credit transfer mechanisms\, and the conditions for qualifying for various bonus credits\, including the 5 Times Bonus\, Domestic Content Bonus\, and Energy Community Bonus. \nA significant portion of the course is dedicated to the nuances of specific technologies eligible for these incentives\, such as ground source heat pumps and thermal energy storage systems. Participants will explore the criteria for eligibility\, including the concept of dual-use equipment and the importance of proper system design to maximize tax benefits. \nThe course also covers critical compliance aspects\, including the Prevailing Wage and Apprenticeship requirements. Architects and designers will learn how these labor standards affect project planning and execution\, as well as the potential penalties for non-compliance and methods to mitigate risks. \nAdditionally\, the course provides insights into the EPAct 179D deduction\, its recent updates under the IRA\, and how it applies to both commercial buildings and designers of tax-exempt entities. Participants will understand the new deduction levels\, qualification criteria\, and methods for monetizing these benefits in their projects. \nThe course concludes with an overview of related incentives\, such as the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit and the Credit for Qualified Commercial Clean Vehicles\, providing a holistic view of the energy-related tax landscape affecting the built environment. \nLearning Objectives \nBy the end of this course\, participants will be able to: \n\nInterpret and apply the various energy tax incentives provided by the Inflation Reduction Act to architectural and design projects.\nEvaluate project eligibility for specific tax credits and bonuses\, including the Investment Tax Credit\, Domestic Content Bonus\, and Energy Community Bonus.\nIntegrate knowledge of Prevailing Wage and Apprenticeship requirements into project planning and execution to ensure compliance and maximize tax benefits.\nIdentify opportunities to leverage the updated EPAct 179D deduction in both commercial and tax-exempt building projects.\nAssess the potential financial impacts of energy-related tax incentives on project feasibility and design decisions.\nDevelop strategies to incorporate eligible technologies such as ground source heat pumps and thermal energy storage into building designs to capitalize on available tax incentives.\n\nTarget Audience \nThis course is designed for licensed architects\, architectural designers\, sustainable design specialists\, and other building industry professionals involved in the planning\, design\, and execution of energy-efficient building projects. \nCourse Level\nBeginner to Intermediate \nCourse Duration\n1 hour virtual event (Zoom call-in instructions will be sent the day prior to the event via an EVENT REMINDER)\n1 CE credit

SUMMARY:Innovation in Mass Timber Solutions (IMTS) Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Innovation in Mass Timber Solutions (IMTS) is a two-day conference that will gather experts from across industry and academia\, to provide an experience that engages participants in the exploration of the development and application of mass timber and cross laminated timber. This conference provides an opportunity to bridge industry and academia to come together to develop a road map for an initiative in innovation in wood education. Featuring a field tour\, expert presentations\, small group activities\, and discussions\, IMTS will engage attendees in the exploration of the development and application of mass timber solutions. \nDuring the field tour\, participants will watch a demonstration of engineering and mechanical testing of cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels at NC State’s Constructed Facilities Lab\, visit sites–including JC Raulston Arboretum–with heavy timber construction\, and learn about growing timber by visiting a managed forest (Schenck Forest). This event will cater to the diverse interests of academics\, architects and designers\, builders\, forestry professionals\, industry\, manufacturers\, municipalities\, and others. \nIf you are interested in submitting a poster to promote your work/projects\, click here. \nCredit pending. \nClick here to register.  (Registration closes October 13\, 2024.)

SUMMARY:Meeting your Design and Performance Requirements - Lunch & Learn
DESCRIPTION:Meeting your Design and Performance Requirements with Pultruded Fiberglass Windows and Doors\nbrought to you by American Cedar & Millwork \nThis course will familiarize you with the basic aspects of fiberglass composites\, with a specific emphasis on pultruded fiberglass.  By examining the performance characteristics\, durability and numerous environmental advantages of pultruded fiberglass\, the course will outline the advantages of windows and doors made from pultruded fiberglass and use case studies to demonstrate applications across a wide variety of multi-family and commercial build environments where sustainability\, durability and human experience are prioritized. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDiscuss how composite materials provide predictable\, sustainable and superior performance characteristics over other materials.\nExplain the production of fiberglass composites and the advantages of the pultrusion process from a manufacturing and environmental perspective\nIdentify the performance characteristics of windows and doors made from pultruded fiberglass and how they help meet the latest design trends that maximize light\, air and views for building-user well-being\nDiscuss finishes\, AAMA certification and energy efficiency for pultruded fiberglass windows and doors\nExplore case studies of pultruded fiberglass windows and doors in various projects for performance\, resiliency\, and sustainability.\n\nCE Credit: 1 LU/HSW\nHSW Justification:\nThis new course is virtually identical to our PULFIBER19 which was approved for HSW designation. The learning objectives have largely remained the same but the case studies are updated and new for this version. As a composite\, pultruded fiberglass is long-lasting\, durable\, high performing\, and stable – all of which are positive aspects as a material used in windows and doors. The course content demonstrates how theses physical aspects of the windows and doors impact the well-being of the building occupants such as consistent operability of windows and doors to let in fresh air\, large sizes to access views and outdoor spaces\, strength of locking mechanisms for safety\, and quality materials used in the window frames. Whether used in multi-family residential or other commercial buildings\, newly constructed or remodeled\, windows and doors made from pultruded fiberglass are resilient and provide many environmental advantages to the build environment.
