Participants will understand indoor air quality assessment\, including mold\, and how it may impact projects during the planning and design phase for either renovation or new construction projects. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nParticipants will describe Industry Standard indoor air quality/mold/moisture assessment techniques\nParticipants will discover how sample data is collected and interpreted\nParticipants will evaluate potential project impacts (i.e. budget\, project duration\, etc.)\nParticipants will select qualified profession for resolution of indoor air quality/mold/moisture related problem\n\nPRESENTED BY \nChristopher B. Murray\, CIH\, CSP | Principal Industrial Hygienist/Project Manager \nMr. Murray is certified in the comprehensive aspects of industrial hygiene by the American Industrial Hygiene Association and as a safety professional by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals. Mr. Murray has been involved in a number of significant projects for municipal\, commercial and industrial/manufacturing clients throughout the United States and abroad. His expertise includes: OSHA regulatory compliance audits including personal noise exposure evaluations\, air contaminant evaluations\, indoor air quality evaluations\, ventilation assessments\, recommendations for engineering controls\, and review and development of OSHA-required programs\, including respiratory protection\, hazard communication\, blood borne pathogens\, asbestos\, lead\, among others. Mr. Murray has provided litigation support in industrial hygiene for both plaintiff and defense cases. \nMr. Murray is a past president of the Carolinas Local Section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association and currently is an at large board member of the Eastern Carolina Safety and Health Conference committee.

This program will discuss proper brick veneer detailing topics including wall types\, flashing\, and weepholes\, expansion/control joints\, corbelling and mortar joint types. We will address ASTM specifications for brick and mortar\, recommended materials for flashing and wall ties\, and project specification recommendations for lump sum mason\, sample panels\, and hot and cold weather. \nPresented by: \nA. Dwayne Bryant\, PE \nDwayne has a BS degree in Civil Engineering from NC State University and is currently licensed as a Professional Engineer in NC. He has been in the brick industry for over 34 years serving engineers\, architects\, general contractors and masonry contractors. Dwayne spent the first twelve years of his career as the staff engineer at the Brick Association of NC where he eventually became the Director of Technical Services at the Brick Association of the Carolinas. Since that time\, he has worked in Architectural Sales and Marketing in the brick industry spending the last 14 years with Palmetto Brick Company. Dwayne is active in several local architectural and construction related organizations in North Carolina and is a member of ASTM. Dwayne has been happily married to his high school sweetheart Tabby for 37 years. They have 3 grown children\, all of which are married\, and they have 7 grandchildren.

DESCRIPTION:AIA Triangle Virtual Lunch Program \nSponsored by \n \nCOVID-19 Building Readiness Plan (1 HSW) \nTuesday\, November 10 | 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm \n\nAIA Members/AIA Triangle Annual Partners/Students: $0 | Non Members: $35\nOnline program – registration required\nDeadline to register: 10:00 am on Tuesday\, November 10th\nZoom meeting link will be emailed to registrants the morning of the program\n\n\nWe all have been dealing with an unprecedented time in our history with the COVID-19 pandemic that has changed our world.  We all certainly hope that we can return back to our normal lives soon.  As our businesses\, offices\, schools and other facilities begin to open\, there are recommendations by the CDC\, OSHA and the American Society of Heating\, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) on how the building operations and building systems should be prepared prior to safely occupying these buildings and facilities. The presentation will also help the design and construction community inform their clients\, such as building owners and facility managers\, on how to provide a safe working environment for all building occupants. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES: \n\nParticipants will be able to review their current building/facility operation and compare to current CDC and OSHA guidelines. The participants can evaluate how their staff reacts to the implementation of these guidelines.\nParticipants will be able to review their current building/facility systems and compare to ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force recommendations. The participants can evaluate how their building maintenance and facilities groups implements these  procedures into their standard maintenance procedures.\nParticipants will be able to assess their client’s buildings and facilities with these guidelines and provide recommendations.  The participants can evaluate how many of their clients choose follow these recommendations at their buildings and facilities.\nThe participants will be able to differentiate between the Epidemic Operating Conditions in Place (ECiP) and Post-Epidemic Operating Conditions in Plance (P-ECip) through the ASHRAE Epidemic Task force.  The participants can evaluate how their internal staff as well as clients implement these recommendations and procedures within their buildings and facilities.\n\nPRESENTED BY: \nJohn Quiocho\, PE\, LEED AP\, Sr. Associate \nMr. Quiocho is a Mechanical Engineer with 22 years experience in HVAC and plumbing system design and project management. His experience includes designing and managing public building projects. He holds a BS in Construction Engineering with a concentration in mechanical construction from NC State University. \nIn his fourteen years at EDi\, Mr. Quiocho has managed 175+ projects. His experience with EDi includes corporate projects\, laboratory projects\, K-12 projects\, community college as well as university projects. Additionally\, he has worked with state agencies including NC Department of Administration and NC Department of Transportation as well as completed projects within several local municipalities. His project management experience includes managing a team of engineers for project coordination\, time management and project budgets through design and construction phases.

The lecture will show best practices for building specifications of interior and exterior materials and how to specify products that have EPD’s and are healthy and low in embodied carbon. The lecture will also reveal the importance of the design of the structural system for reducing the embodied carbon with an emphasis on how to design and specify mass timber systems. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \nParticipants will recognize the importance of reducing a building’s embodied carbon through the specification of interior and exterior building materials. \nParticipants will derive the best practices for specifying materials that have a low embodied carbon and which building systems and materials will have the greatest impact on reducing the building’s overall embodied carbon. \nParticipants will assess the importance of the design of the structural system on reducing the embodied carbon and some of the advantages of using a mass timber structure. \nParticipants will discover the basics of how to design and specify mass timber structural systems including CLT systems and some of the strategies for selecting the most appropriate mass timber frame system for the building type.

Her teaching and research are focused on livability and sustainability issues in global cities\, the integration of natural systems into design of landscapes\, buildings and urban places\, and how intelligent design can improve lives\, reduce waste and promote equity. In addition\, Dr. Abrams is the executive director of the City Design Foundation\, a 501(c)(3) organization that supports student research in the design of resilient cities.

Prior to New Affiliates she worked in Europe and the United States\, most recently as an Associate at MOS Architects in New York. Alongside practice\, she frequently teaches design\, history and theory of architecture. She holds a Master of Architecture from Princeton\, where she was awarded the Suzanne Kolarik Underwood Prize for excellence in design and the Stanley J Seeger fellowship; and a Diploma with honors in Architecture and Engineering from the University of Patras in Greece. \nPrior to founding N/A\, Jaffer Kolb worked as a designer in New York\, Chicago and Los Angeles for a range of international studios. He is currently an adjunct assistant professor at Columbia University’s GSAPP\, and was the 2015 Muschenheim Fellow at the University of Michigan’s Taubman College. Previously he worked on the 13th Venice Architecture Biennial under David Chipperfield and before that was the US editor for the Architectural Review. He holds a Master of Architecture from Princeton University\, a Master of Urban Planning from the London School of Economics\, and a Bachelor of Arts in Film Studies from Wesleyan University.

While there\, he led award-winning projects for institutions such as the New Museum of Contemporary Art\, Socrates Sculpture Center\, The Brooklyn Historical Society and The Philadelphia Art Museum in addition to completing a number of private residential commissions. \nA registered Architect in New York State\, Ryan studied at the Architectural Association in London and received his Bachelor of Arts in Visual Arts and Master of Architecture from the College of Design at North Carolina State University. There\, he was co-editor of The Student Publication and was awarded the Faculty Design Prize and Henry Kamphoefner Fellowship for highest graduate achievement. \nRyan is a recipient of the Deborah Norden Prize from The Architectural League of New York\, and a Design Research Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. \nHe is currently a Senior Lecturer at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco\, and has been an invited juror at the University of Southern California\, UC Berkeley\, N.C. State University\, The Architectural League of New York\, and Yale University. \nWork of the Practice has been featured in The New York Times\, T Magazine\, Vogue\, Art Forum\, Art News\, The SF Chronicle\, Cultured and Monocle among others.

These uses will cover both interior and exterior veneer applications. The presentation will focus on both adhered masonry and “clipped” or anchored veneers. Specifically we will focus on: \n\nAdhered Masonry Veneers Both Exterior and Interior and Super Flexible Polymer Fortified Mortars and why the metal lath and scratch coat adhered veneer method is inferior and a thing of the past\nClipped or Anchored Back Drained and Ventilated Rainscreen Applications (Sealed or Open)\nRetrofit Applications\nBarrier Walls\, Drainage Plane Walls\, Insulated Drainage Plane Walls\, Back Drained and Ventilated Rainscreen Walls\, and Energy Code (SB-10/ASHRAE 90.1) Compliant Wall Design\n\nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nTo understand the mechanism of quarried stone formation\nTo understand how Calcium Silicate Stone is created and how the production process is similar to quarried stone formation\nTo identify 2 distinct systems for installing Thin-Clad Stone materials (Adhered Veneers and Rainscreen Veneers)\nIdentify Thin-Clad wall design systems that are applicable for the particular building design\, climate\, codes etc… (i.e. face sealed walls\, drainage plane assemblies\, insulated drainage plane assemblies\, and Energy Code (SB-10/ASHRAE 90.1) compliant wall assemblies)\nTo recognize the overall design versatility of Thin-Clad Stone as a cladding material\nTo understand the benefits of using Calcium Silicate Materials (i.e. Green benefits)
