For over 20 years\, she has thoughtfully and efficiently guided award-winning projects from pre-design through construction administration. As a Project Manager\, she carefully guides key stakeholders through the development of esteemed projects for their communities by crafting a unique design process for each of her clients. For Teri\, coupling her ability to communicate design ideas with meaningful community engagement is essential to her role in the design process. Teri’s talent for leading the architectural design process has been recognized and celebrated throughout her career. After graduating from North Carolina State University. She became one of the first five African American women to become a Registered Architect in the state of NorthCarolina. In 2007\, Teri joined the Freelon Group and rapidly advanced to Senior Associate as a result of her exceptional client management skills. After serving as Lead Project Manager on award-winning projects like the National Center for Civil and Human Rights and EmancipationPark\, she was selected to participate in Perkins+Will’s Leadership Institute and appointed to the firm’s Diversity Council. As an insightful mentor to young architects\, Teri shared her personal and professional experiences as a minority architect during the 2015 National Organization of Minority Architects conference as a seminar panelist. She has also shown her commitment to her community as a Preservation Durham Executive Board Member\, a Durham Rotary Club Member\, a Minister for Stephen Ministries\, and a volunteer with Big Brother/Big Sister of Durham. In addition\, Teri is a member of the Board of Advisors of the United Minority Contractors Association of NorthCarolina as well as a member of the Durham Arts Council’s SmART Resource Board. \n\nElizabeth Caliendo\, AIA | Senior Architect\, HH Architecture \nElizabeth received her Bachelor of Architecture from North Carolina State University’s College of Design. As an active member of the local design community\, she joined the AIA Triangle Board in 2018 and is currently an AIA Triangle Board Member and is Secretary on the AIAT Board Executive Committee and serves as chair of the AIA Triangle Design Awards Task Force. She served six years on the Raleigh Historic Development Commission (RHDC) and is now serving on the RHDC Design Review Advisory Committee. Elizabeth is passionate about designing spaces that are thoughtful\, compelling\, and impactful. She brings over 25 years of design expertise to our team. Shawna currently serves as the AIA North Carolina Emerging Professional Director where she hopes to expand on programming that focuses on keeping Emerging Professionals and Young Architects in the profession. \n\nZakiya Wiggins\, Assoc. AIA\, NOMA \nZakiya Wiggins is an architectural designer\, artist\, and advocate from Cary\, NC. She holds a Bachelor of Environmental Design in Architecture from North Carolina State University and a Master of Architecture from Morgan State University. Zakiya is the Vice President of the North Carolina Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects (NCNOMA)\, a board member of Diversify Architecture\, a 2019 member of the AIA Virginia Emerging Leaders in Architecture class\, and a recipient of the prestigious Alpha Rho Chi Medal. This program will discuss proper brick veneer detailing topics including wall types\, flashing\, and weepholes\, expansion/control joints\, corbelling and mortar joint types. We will address ASTM specifications for brick and mortar\, recommended materials for flashing and wall ties\, and project specification recommendations for lump sum mason\, sample panels\, and hot and cold weather. \nPresented by: \nA. Dwayne Bryant\, PE \nDwayne has a BS degree in Civil Engineering from NC State University and is currently licensed as a Professional Engineer in NC. He has been in the brick industry for over 34 years serving engineers\, architects\, general contractors and masonry contractors. Dwayne spent the first twelve years of his career as the staff engineer at the Brick Association of NC where he eventually became the Director of Technical Services at the Brick Association of the Carolinas. Since that time\, he has worked in Architectural Sales and Marketing in the brick industry spending the last 14 years with Palmetto Brick Company. Dwayne is active in several local architectural and construction related organizations in North Carolina and is a member of ASTM. Dwayne has been happily married to his high school sweetheart Tabby for 37 years. They have 3 grown children\, all of which are married\, and they have 7 grandchildren.

The presentation will also help the design and construction community inform their clients\, such as building owners and facility managers\, on how to provide a safe working environment for all building occupants. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES: \n\nParticipants will be able to review their current building/facility operation and compare to current CDC and OSHA guidelines. The participants can evaluate how their staff reacts to the implementation of these guidelines.\nParticipants will be able to review their current building/facility systems and compare to ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force recommendations. The participants can evaluate how their building maintenance and facilities groups implements these  procedures into their standard maintenance procedures.\nParticipants will be able to assess their client’s buildings and facilities with these guidelines and provide recommendations.  The participants can evaluate how many of their clients choose follow these recommendations at their buildings and facilities.\nThe participants will be able to differentiate between the Epidemic Operating Conditions in Place (ECiP) and Post-Epidemic Operating Conditions in Plance (P-ECip) through the ASHRAE Epidemic Task force.  The participants can evaluate how their internal staff as well as clients implement these recommendations and procedures within their buildings and facilities.\n\nPRESENTED BY: \nJohn Quiocho\, PE\, LEED AP\, Sr. Associate \nMr. Quiocho is a Mechanical Engineer with 22 years experience in HVAC and plumbing system design and project management. His experience includes designing and managing public building projects. He holds a BS in Construction Engineering with a concentration in mechanical construction from NC State University. \nIn his fourteen years at EDi\, Mr. Quiocho has managed 175+ projects. His experience with EDi includes corporate projects\, laboratory projects\, K-12 projects\, community college as well as university projects. Additionally\, he has worked with state agencies including NC Department of Administration and NC Department of Transportation as well as completed projects within several local municipalities. His project management experience includes managing a team of engineers for project coordination\, time management and project budgets through design and construction phases.

This session will focus primarily on design strategies to reduce a building’s embodied carbon through the specification of building materials. The lecture will show best practices for building specifications of interior and exterior materials and how to specify products that have EPD’s and are healthy and low in embodied carbon. The lecture will also reveal the importance of the design of the structural system for reducing the embodied carbon with an emphasis on how to design and specify mass timber systems. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \nParticipants will recognize the importance of reducing a building’s embodied carbon through the specification of interior and exterior building materials. \nParticipants will derive the best practices for specifying materials that have a low embodied carbon and which building systems and materials will have the greatest impact on reducing the building’s overall embodied carbon. \nParticipants will assess the importance of the design of the structural system on reducing the embodied carbon and some of the advantages of using a mass timber structure. \nParticipants will discover the basics of how to design and specify mass timber structural systems including CLT systems and some of the strategies for selecting the most appropriate mass timber frame system for the building type.

This program will explore environments\, architectural site\, structural and building system aspects of any adaptive reuse building project. It will also provide guidance for the initial stages of design. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES: \n\nParticipants will identify critical environmental\, site\, structural\, architectural and HVAC system aspects in the preliminary assessment of an existing building being considered for adaptive reuse. \nParticipants will develop and apply a program to identify\, evaluate\, measure and document existing conditions in a building that affect its adaptive reuse.\nParticipants will assess and classify an adaptive reuse project in terms of its anticipated level of alteration.\nParticipants will identify and integrate structural considerations in the design of adaptive re-use projects.\n\nPRESENTED BY: \n \nDavid W. Spriggs\, PE\, CWI | Draper Aden Associates \nMr. Spriggs is currently a Principal at Draper Aden Associates\, working generally out of their Cary\, NC and Richmond\, VA offices. He has over 30 years of experience in analysis and design of structural systems for commercial\, residential\, industrial\, and institutional buildings\, working with multi-discipline teams. His work has often involved alteration and additions to existing buildings\, as well as new construction. Specific experience includes: Development of laser scanning and BIM protocols for existing building investigations; design of structural steel\, masonry\, reinforced concrete\, prestressed concrete\, structural wood\, and cold formed metal systems; and analysis and design of retaining walls and shallow and deep foundations. Her teaching and research are focused on livability and sustainability issues in global cities\, the integration of natural systems into design of landscapes\, buildings and urban places\, and how intelligent design can improve lives\, reduce waste and promote equity. In addition\, Dr. Abrams is the executive director of the City Design Foundation\, a 501(c)(3) organization that supports student research in the design of resilient cities.

The participants will develop a better understanding differences between various computational design and energy modeling software and which tools will be best equipped for various stages of the design process.
