He focuses on the intersection of design and technology\, leveraging 3d rendering\, AI and other emerging technologies to push architectural innovation. His work explores new ways to enhance visualization\, efficiency\, and creativity in the design process. \nShawn Michael is a designer at Cline Design in Raleigh. Born outside Cleveland\, he received his degrees from Kent State University and shortly thereafter escaped Ohio in search of better weather and more diverse design opportunities. He leads the extra-curricular design competition and R&D efforts at Cline\, constantly seeking new opportunities to explore form\, function\, materiality\, and teambuilding. He’s partnered with the Raleigh TAP taskforce to better understand technological advancements in the field of architecture\, as well as to raise awareness of what new tools and techniques are available to the local design community.  \nThis course has been approved for one CE credit.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the upcoming event: Observing and Documenting the Lasting Impacts of Segregation in Raleigh\, NC which aims to be a dynamic discussion on the lasting legacy of segregation and its relationship to current issues of equity\, access and affordability and around Raleigh’s housing crisis. AIA Continuing Education Credits are pending.  \nWe hope to see you there! \n—— \nEvent and Lecture Details: \nThis event will include short (20 minute presentations) with a 30 minute moderated Q+A. \nPresentation 1: History of Raleigh’s Black Neighborhoods\, Carmen Cauthen\, Author and Historian\nHistorian and author Carmen Cauthen will showcase research on Raleigh’s historic Black neighborhoods from 1860-today with emphasis on the local policies that impacted neighborhood disinvestment and erasure. \nPresentation 2: Uncovering Wake Counties Racially Restrictive Covenants Project \, Lisa Boccetti and Bob Williams\nOver the last year\,  Lisa Boccetti and Bob Williams\, with the support of Wake County Register of Deeds Tammy Brunner\,  have led a team of volunteers to review and document Wake County properties with historically racially restrictive covenants. Lisa and Bob will share their findings and the future of the project. \nPresentation 3: Mapping the Lasting Effects of Segregation Policies in Raleigh\, Tania Allen and Sara Queen\, College of Design\, NC State University\nNC State College of Design Professors Tania Allen and Sara Queen have been researching and leading courses looking at equity in housing and the built environment. This lecture will showcase local\, regional\, and national maps which showcase the historic patterns of development and disinvestment connected to the current state of housing in and around Raleigh and Wake County.

SUMMARY:Navigating the Inflation Reduction Act: Energy Tax Incentives for Architects and Designers
DESCRIPTION:This comprehensive course delves into the intricate details of the energy tax incentives provided by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)\, with a specific focus on their implications for architects\, designers\, and the built environment. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the various tax credits\, bonuses\, and requirements that can significantly impact project planning\, design decisions\, and financial outcomes. \nThe course begins with an overview of the Alternative Energy Credits under Section 48\, exploring the Investment Tax Credit (ITC) and its applications. Participants will learn about the elective pay option\, credit transfer mechanisms\, and the conditions for qualifying for various bonus credits\, including the 5 Times Bonus\, Domestic Content Bonus\, and Energy Community Bonus. \nA significant portion of the course is dedicated to the nuances of specific technologies eligible for these incentives\, such as ground source heat pumps and thermal energy storage systems. Participants will explore the criteria for eligibility\, including the concept of dual-use equipment and the importance of proper system design to maximize tax benefits. \nThe course also covers critical compliance aspects\, including the Prevailing Wage and Apprenticeship requirements. Architects and designers will learn how these labor standards affect project planning and execution\, as well as the potential penalties for non-compliance and methods to mitigate risks. \nAdditionally\, the course provides insights into the EPAct 179D deduction\, its recent updates under the IRA\, and how it applies to both commercial buildings and designers of tax-exempt entities. DESCRIPTION:The Innovation in Mass Timber Solutions (IMTS) is a two-day conference that will gather experts from across industry and academia\, to provide an experience that engages participants in the exploration of the development and application of mass timber and cross laminated timber. This conference provides an opportunity to bridge industry and academia to come together to develop a road map for an initiative in innovation in wood education. Featuring a field tour\, expert presentations\, small group activities\, and discussions\, IMTS will engage attendees in the exploration of the development and application of mass timber solutions. \nDuring the field tour\, participants will watch a demonstration of engineering and mechanical testing of cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels at NC State’s Constructed Facilities Lab\, visit sites–including JC Raulston Arboretum–with heavy timber construction\, and learn about growing timber by visiting a managed forest (Schenck Forest).
