DESCRIPTION:Dr. Darius Arya \nExecutive Director | American Institute for Roman Culture \nUrban development of Rome\, from Foundation to Empire  \nThursday\, February 4 | 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm \nCE credit pending approval \n\nOnline program – RSVP required for continuing education credit\nDeadline to register is 11:00 am on Thursday\, February 4\, 2021\nZoom meeting link will be emailed to registrants the morning of the program\n\n\nArchaeologist\, pro­fes­sor\, doc­u­men­tary host\, Dar­ius Arya is just as com­fort­able in front of the prover­bial blackboard as he is in front of the cam­era and in the trenches.   \nBorn in 1971 in Buffalo\, New York\, Darius grew up in Huntington\, West Virginia. In 1989 he graduated from the Phillips Exeter Academy\, New Hampshire before going on to study further at the University of Pennsylvania\, graduating in 1993. He also studied in Rome\, Italy as part of the ICCS Research Master’s degree (Master of Arts)\, before in 2002 earning Ph.D from the University of Texas at Austin. Darius is also a Ful­bright Scholar and Amer­i­can Acad­emy of Rome fel­low FAAR’00 and throughout his career has taught in the United States and in Italy directed various archaeological excavations including projects at the Roman Forum in Rome and at Ostia Antica. \nDarius currently lives with his family in Rome. Since 2002\, he has served as Executive Director of the American Institute for Roman Culture\, a non-profit organization that works to promote and defend Rome’s cultural heritage through educational programs\, projects\, public outreach\, conservation\, video and social media. \nIn the US he has appeared as a guest lec­turer\, expert in\, and the host of numer­ous doc­u­men­taries for Dis­cov­ery\, The His­tory Channel\, National Geo­graphic and PBS. In Europe Darius has featured as a guest on several UK (BBC\, Channel 4) documentaries and in Italy as the host of Under Italy on Rai5. \nAs an accessible historian and Roman archaeologist\, Darius is regularly cited in the press; past features include CNN\, Time\, The Guardian and BBC.  \nIn 2017 Darius was recognized as Periscoper of the Year by the Short Awards for his use of live-streaming as a tool for education\, and launched his first podcast series\, Darius Arya Digs.

Three virtual mentorship sessions with students will be held on Thursday\, February 18th\, Thursday\, March 11th\, and Thursday\, April 8th from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. \nWe will match architects\, emerging professionals\, and students into pods based on similar interests and goals for mentorship. Professor of Architecture | NC State University \nBook Release Talk: Landed Internationals \nFriday\, February 26 | 12:00 pm  \nCE credit pending approval \n\nOnline program – RSVP required for continuing education credit\nDeadline to register is 11:00 am on Friday\, February 26th\nZoom meeting link will be emailed to registrants the morning of the program\n\n\nBurak Erdim teaches lecture and seminar courses on the history of modernity\, modern architecture\, and urbanism as well as graduate and undergraduate studios. He is also the coordinator of the Graduate Concentration in the History and Theory of Architecture. His research examines the operations of transnational networks of housing and planning during the twentieth century within contexts of decolonization\, national liberation\, and globalization\, as well as in relation to discourses and political economies of development. His forthcoming book\, Landed Internationals: Planning Cultures\, the Academy\, and the Making of the Modern Middle East (University of Texas Press\, 2020)\, examines how postwar encounters in housing and planning transformed the dynamics of international development and challenged American modernity. He is a contributor to Aggregate Architectural History Collaborative’s next project entitled\, Systems and the South. He also serves on the editorial board of Southern Cultures. \nErdim’s research has been supported by grants from the Andrew W. Mellon initiative in Urban Landscape Studies at Dumbarton Oaks (fall 2016)\, the Aga Khan Program in Islamic Architecture at MIT (spring 2017)\, and the Fulbright Program (2007-8). Prior to joining NC State\, Erdim received his Ph.D. in the History of Art and Architecture from the University of Virginia and taught as a visiting assistant professor at Mississippi State University.
