Located on the Northeast Cape Fear River\, the project goes above and beyond to restore and celebrate the native coastal ecology and illuminate the site’s history as a working waterfront. The site and structural designs were shaped by an extensive community-driven master planning process and publicly funded through a bond. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nParticipates will be able to define performance goals in terms of re-use\, site\, water\, connectivity & environmental quality\n\n\nParticipants will be able to understand the unique challenges of designing a waterfront park and event venue on a historic brownfield.\n\n\nParticipants will observe that the project has been operational\, and its resiliency was tested when a hurricane struck the city during the park design process\, demonstrating that the site’s design was effective from flooding\n\n\nParticipants will discover how the waterfront space accommodates diverse uses–from daily respite and recreation to large-scale concerts and civic festivals–while also prioritizing urban connectivity\, enhanced ecologies\, and renewed focus on water resource\n\n\n\n\nPRESENTED BY \n\nJoe Puckett\, PE\, Practice Leader\, Civil Engineering\nNatalie Carmen\, Director\, Civil Engineering\nMatt Evans\, Associate Director of Landscape Architecture\nTom McLane\, Project Manager\, Structural Engineering\n\nJoe Puckett is the Practice Leader of Stewart’s Civil Engineering Practice and has experience with civil site design for residential and commercial / office buildings with public and private clients. He has acquired a broad range of experience in engineering design and construction plan production and permitting for site layout\, grading and drainage\, stormwater management\, stormwater treatment\, water distribution systems\, sanitary sewer\, onsite wastewater\, erosion control\, and roadway plans. \nNatalie Carmen has experience working in civil engineering\, landscape design\, and landscape architecture. She is an expert in stormwater design\, including low-impact development\, and has published her research on innovative stormwater solutions. Natalie’s design approach combines technical expertise with a sensitivity to natural systems\, and she is dedicated to designing multi-purpose site amenities that meet engineering and landscape goals. \nMatt Evans has experience working in landscape design and landscape architecture and is the lead designer for his team at Stewart. Buildings alone account for 40% of the global greenhouse gas emissions. Two-thirds of that total impact is from operational emissions while the remainder is from embodied emissions. Embodied emissions include all the emissions required to produce everything that goes into our buildings – the structure\, enclosure and all the materials inside. Historically\, the focus in the design community has been on reducing operational emissions since they represent the majority of the total impact. In response\, the AEC community has been able to reduce operational emissions in the built environment through designing smarter buildings\, as a result the recent focus has shifted to the other one-third of the pie\, embodied carbon. In response to a new focus on embodied carbon\, the USGBC included a new credit under the materials section\, Building Life-Cycle Impact Reduction\, where there is an option to perform a Whole Building Lifecycle Assessment (WBLCA) worth a total of 3 points in v4 and 4 points in LEED v4.1. The goal of the WBLCA is to reduce the embodied impacts of a building by quantifying the environmental impacts of structure and enclosure. This course provides an overview of embodied carbon\, the role that structural engineers play in the sustainable design process\, how design teams can measure and minimize carbon impacts in building systems\, and an understanding of how sustainable structural design integrates with other building systems to reduce overall impact. We will also review Whole Building Life Cycle Assessment and LEED v4 through a recent case study. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nRecognize how different materials contribute to the overall embodied environmental impacts of the structural system\nIdentify design tools to measure embodied carbon\nRecognize which strategies are most effective for minimizing the embodied impacts of construction materials\nCompare the embodied impacts of structural systems to the impacts of building operations\n\n\n\n\nPRESENTED BY \nKelly Roberts\, P.E.\, S.E.\, LEED AP BD+C and Matt O’Callaghan\, PE\, SE \nKelly Roberts is a Principal and Senior Structural Project Manager at Walter P Moore Atlanta. It’s also critical to consider the environment in our designs; we can use material selection and panel sizing to help benefit the surrounding world for a more sustainable future. Buildings must also be visually appealing. In this presentation\, we will explore how to take material that is seemingly boring square metal and transform it into something stunning. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nParticipants will discover how insulation impacts thermal movement. There are many types of insulation for sale\, and we will cover the material makeup\, advantages\, and disadvantages of the main types. It’s also important to note how insulation works to make it more efficient. The thickness of the material interacts with air and slows down the transfer of heat. We will also discuss the materials adjacent to the insulation impact the building properties. This is a property called thermal movement and is just as important as the insulation itself\n\n  \n\nParticipants will discover how to keep a building weathertight while also allowing it to breathe. The general thought process is that the roof and walls keep the building weathertight. Now while that is inherently true\, the weatherproofing behind the exterior walls is often overlooked. These air and vapor barriers are used in most exterior skin applications but often ignored. Certain materials work better in certain situations and climates. Not only does the building need to stay watertight\, but these barriers must allow air to pass through to keep the building materials dry\n\n  \n\nParticipants will explore how we skin a building while being kind to the environment. Each material impacts the environment in a different way. We will also discuss yield of materials and how the design can either negatively impact or positively impact the environment. His primary responsibilities include design leadership\, client relationships and Culture & Museums Practice Area leadership in the southeast region. His current work includes the Bandwidth Headquarters in Raleigh\, NC\, Kaleideum in Winston-Salem\, NC and Bloc83 Tower 3 in Raleigh\, NC. In 20 years of practice\, Brad has provided leadership for academic\, cultural\, government\, commercial office\, and residential clients with a focus on design excellence and technical rigor. His work has been featured in numerous publications\, and he has won multiple awards including an AIA New York Chapter Award of Merit. Brad is a frequent guest critic at schools of architecture\, including NYIT\, Auburn University\, Roger Williams University\, Norwich University and NC State University\, where he has served as a juror for NC State’s Shawcroft Drawing Prize every year since 2017. Brad is currently chair of the AIA Triangle Design Awards Committee where he has served since 2016. He is a Contract Instructor for the International Codes Council (ICC) and an Adjunct Faculty Member at Pratt’s Center for Continuing & Professional Studies in New York City.\n  \nMr. Marinelli is a certified Accessibility Specialist/Plans Examiner by the International Code Council and serves on various committees including American National Standard Institute Residential Committee which he serves as Chair. He also represented the United Spinal Association on the US Access Board’s Emergency Transportable Housing Advisory Committee.\n  \nMr. Marinelli holds a Master of Science from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He is certified in code enforcement by the New York State Department of State Codes Division and as an Accessibility Specialist/Plans Examiner by the International Codes Council (ICC).
