With AIA’s commitment to the 2030 Challenge (carbon neutrality for all new construction)\, examples of radical sustainability are invaluable. Join us for a walking tour led by Facilities Manager\, Sierra Dickerson and participate in a Q&A session with the design team of Frank Harmon\, FAIA and David Swanson\, RLA\, ASLA\, to learn how they navigated challenges to deliver a LEED Platinum Education Center and enhanced conservation garden – a resource for all of North Carolina. \nThe walking tour will include: \nBotanical Garden walking tour led by Facilities Manager\, Sierra Dickerson featuring discussion of the Display Garden\, Education Center\, native habitats\, and the parking area design. \nDesign Team Q&A and discussion led by Frank Harmon\, FAIA and David Swanson\, RLA\, ASLA.  \nTopics of discussion include: \n\nHow the project was conceived\, and how the attitude of the design team supported the goals of the NCBG team\nHow both active and passive sustainability strategies were implemented\, and how the built facility integrates with the garden plan\nWhich community stakeholders were involved in the design\, and how their feedback benefited the project\nHow the theme of education was implemented throughout the building and garden design\nCollaborative process between architect and landscape architect\, and how the thinking and strategy shifted over the course of the design process\nKey challenges the design team faced during design and construction of the facility\n\n\nFrank Harmon\, FAIA is a multi-award winning architect who founded his North Carolina-based practice in 1985. While many architects have embraced the principles of sustainable design over recent years\, Frank has been designing environmentally responsible\, modern buildings for nearly three decades – long before “green architecture” became a part of the general lexicon. Sustainability is the most important architectural issues of our time. As a young architect\, he quickly learned that everything he designed would cause the earth to be stripped or mined. Stunned by that realization\, he knew that the only way he could work as an architect was to promise to make a site better than he found it. Sometimes that meant not building at all. From single-family homes and tiny artists’ studios to corporate headquarters\, commercial educational\, and institutional facilities\, Frank’s practice has gone to great lengths to ensure that the buildings are energy-efficient and environmentally conservative. \nDavid Swanson\, RLA\, ASLA was born in Beirut\, Lebanon. His family moved back to North Carolina when he was a small boy. His first interest was in planning and city management\, but eventually he settled on landscape architecture and graduated with an MLA from North Carolina State University College of Design in 1983. Swanson worked at Lewis Clarke Associates (LCA) when the first master plan for the North Carolina Zoo was developed as well as during the Fayetteville Street Mall Project in Raleigh\, NC. In 1988\, Swanson founded his own firm\, Swanson and Associates\, PA. The firm places particular emphasis on careful analysis through the planning process and preparation of creative and innovative solutions using sustainable design practices. The firm staff has over thirty collective years of experience in landscape architecture and planning in both public and private practice\, with particular experience in sustainable site planning and historic preservation issues. David also specializes in the use of native landscapes and natural settings\, and in the adaptive reuse of landscape and hardscape elements. \nSierra Dickerson is the current Facilities and Events Manager for the North Carolina Botanical Gardens. As part of her role\, she manages the ongoing sustainable policies for weddings and catered events at the facility. His projects have involved both new construction and rehabilitation and have ranged from one to twenty-one stories. Design solutions\, because of the Real Matters Workshop\, will be presented and provide a platform to keep the conversation going and growing within the architecture community. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nParticipants will derive key takeaways from the series – the current state of Raleigh\, the city’s current stressors and successes\nParticipants will identify the value of bringing local thought leaders from various backgrounds (racial inequity\, food deserts\, transportation\, infrastructure\, civic engagement\, and city government) together for public discussion\nParticipants will evaluate solutions that participants designed during the workshop and learn how to bring architecture and the community together\, engaging the public in the future of Raleigh\nParticipants will identify ways in which the local architecture community can support a future series to continue to challenge the perception\, value\, and relevancy of the practice of architecture in one of the fastest growing cities in the United States\n\nPRESENTED BY \nMatthew Griffith\, AIA\, Founding Principal of in situ studio \nMatt earned a BS in Mathematics from Davidson College and an MArch from the NCSU College of Design\, where he concentrated in Urban Design and received numerous awards\, including the Kamphoefner Fellowship and the AIA School Medal. \nZach Hoffman\, AIA – Project Manager at in situ studio \nHe graduated with Honors from Appalachian State University in 2011 with a degree in Building Science. While there\, he worked on the 2011 Solar Decathlon and received the Building Science Award for Design Achievement. He completed his master’s in architecture at the NCSU College of Design in 2014\, where he worked on the Benevolence Barn in Graham County with the 2014 Design Build Studio. Prior to joining in situ studio\, he worked with Cannon Architects for three years. \nBrittany Seigert – Manager at in situ studio \nBrittany graduated with honors from the NCSU College of Design with her BEDA in 2019 and her B.Arch in 2020. While a student at NC State\, she was involved with Freedom by Design working on playground improvements for students with developmental disabilities and was able to participate in cohort 2 of the leading strand\, creating an interactive exhibit in downtown Raleigh about the intersection of design and science. She was a nominee for both the AIA Triangle Scholarship and the Shawcroft Prize for Drawing. \nSara Noorani – Manager at in situ studio \nSara received her Bachelor of Architecture and Master of Landscape in Tehran\, Iran. While studying for her Master of Landscape\, she worked at Fluid Motion Architects\, where she had a chance to work on several public award-winning projects. In 2014\, she started her Master of Architecture at the NCSU College of Design. While studying at NCSU\, Sara worked at Clark Nexsen in Raleigh.

Carroll Joyner Community Center designed by Clark Nexsen. The design team (Clark Nexsen)\, in combination with the landscape architect (CLH Design) and Director of Parks and Recreation for the Town of Wake Forest\, will offer tours and insight into the planning\, design and construction of this beloved community asset. The project has been awarded multiple design awards and is a source of pride for the growing Wake Forest community. Together we are looking forward to an enjoyable morning exploring the impact great design has on our communities. This tour is funded by an AIA Activate Grant and the AIA Triangle. Practitioners and public are welcome. \nThe program is organized to showcase key design features and to discuss at various key locations the design process from the perspective of the client\, designer\, consultant\, and public who utilize the community center. The AIA Triangle Design Task Force is excited to offer this first design tour and forum showcasing a 2021 design award winning project. \n\nABOUT THE TOUR \nThe purpose of this tour is to illustrate how award-winning design is the balance of thoughtful community engagement\, client involvement/advocacy\, exhaustive design iteration and carefully executed construction administration. By highlighting this project\, the task force looks to illustrate that a design awarded project is rooted in the story of a community and its advocacy\, and by understanding “how and why”\, a project can transcend its mere programmatic functions to become a beloved community asset. Design is a bridge that connects function with excellence and the Joyner Community Center is a shining example of these principles. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nParticipants will identify how client advocacy; community engagement and thoughtful design can transform a simple project type into a highly performing community asset.\nParticipants will learn the principles of design of spaces for recreation and engagement with emphasis on support spaces and connectivity to services and amenities.\nParticipants will discuss the iterative design process and the subsequent construction documentation required to deliver this award-winning project. The design team will reveal “lessons learned” during the course of design and delivery of the process with emphasis on 1) building code related requirements for a mulit-story facility of this size and program\, 2) unique construction details/techniques required to achieve the overall design objectives\, 3) what issues arose during construction and how were they mitigated to achieve life-safety and design aesthetic goals.\nParticipants will engage with the architectural team and project’s client to holistically learn from varying perspectives how they were engaged in the process and how their involvement amplified the design impact of the final project. Participants will learn about the public engagement process for this community project\, how those community needs are balanced with project budget and design objectives and what feedback loop was created to keep constituents informed about project process.\n\nPRESENTED BY: \nRuben Wall\, Director\, Wake Forest Parks\, Recreation\, and Cultural Resources Department \nRuban Wall is currently the Director of Parks\, Recreation\, and Cultural Resources Department with the Town of Wake Forest. Ruben started with the Town of Wake Forest in April 2011. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation from Shaw University in 1991 and a Master’s Degree in Recreation Administration from North Carolina Central University in 2004. Ruben has been working in the field of recreation for 29 years. Prior to coming to Wake Forest\, he was the Director of Goldsboro Parks and Recreation Department. He also served as the Assistant Director for the City of Durham Parks and Recreation Department. Ruben is a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional and has served on various boards and committees throughout his career. Ruben is a graduate of the 1009 Executive Leadership Institute\, he completed the UNC School of Government in 2012 and the UNC Leading for Results Fellows Program in 2016. In his spare time\, Ruben enjoys spending time with his family\, reading and exercising. \nAlbert McDonald\, AIA\, Senior Architect\, Clark Nexsen \nAlbert is a recognized design leader and community advocate driven by his passion for architecture\, his explorations as a designer\, and his commitment to the profession.  He is valued by clients and design teams for his innovative ideas and design solutions. Active in the Triangle area architecture community\, he is currently the president of AIA Triangle\, a contributing university studio reviewer and former member of the Raleigh Appearance Commission. His built work has received awards at local and regional levels of AIA while his design competition entries have received national and international recognition. In 2018\, Albert was honored with the Emerging Professional Award from AIA North Carolina. His professional experience includes\, higher education\, science + technology\, commercial\, and community projects. He holds a Bachelor in Architecture with honors from NC State University and a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from UNC Charlotte. \nJennifer Heintz\, AIA LEED AP\, Senior Architect\, Associate Principal\, Clark Nexsen \nJennifer has spent most of her career in public and private sector projects for commercial\, higher education\, K-12\, and corporate clients. Much of her project experience has been on complex\, multi-phased projects\, many of which had programs requiring accommodation and sensitive blending of new and historical structures. Jennifer has extensive adaptive reuse and renovation experience including projects for Duke University\, UNC Chapel Hill\, and the Wake County Public School System. She serves on the Clark Nexsen Foundation board that provides charitable community and institutional support and is active in both the AIA Triangle and North Carolina chapters. Jennifer received both a Bachelor of Architecture and a Bachelor of Environmental Design in Architecture from the College of Design at NC State University. She is involved with her alma mater as a member of the College of Design’s Leaders Council Board\, serving as Events Chair as the College plans its upcoming 75th Anniversary milestone. \nKatelyn Ottaway\, AIA LEED AP\, Senior Architect\, Associate\, Clark Nexsen \nKatelyn Ottaway is a senior architect who brings thoughtful and creative solutions to her work and excels at building strong relationships with team members and clients. She has 12 years of experience in higher education and K-12 facilities\, libraries\, community centers\, and research buildings. She is a LEED accredited professional with a specialty in building design and construction and has worked on numerous green projects\, including the James B. Hunt Jr. Library at NC State University. She is a founding member and chair of the Community Collective\, a Raleigh group formed to target and lead Clark Nexsen volunteer and giving efforts in our community. Board President Albert McDonald\, AIA will lead the official business meeting\, introduce the 2022 Board\, review our accomplishments for 2021\, and share our vision for 2022. DESCRIPTION:AIA Triangle Virtual Lunch & Learn Program \nSponsored by \n \nThe Role of Geophysics in Assessing Site Conditions \n and Reducing Risk in Site Design \nSeptember 2 | 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm | 1 AIA LU Credit \nAIA Members and AIA Triangle Annual Partners: $0 | Non-members: $25 \nThis presentation will explore how geophysical methods can be utilized to reduce risk due to unknown conditions during site design.  The use of geophysics in conjunction with invasive exploration can be a cost-effective means of providing substantially more information than that obtained with additional invasive methods.  Understanding the advantages and limitations of geophysical methods helps guide their use and chance of success\, and also helps manage expectations of what can be provided.  Several methods will be reviewed with examples of applications\, particularly with respect to assessment of existing buildings. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nParticipants will explain geophysics and how it can be utilized in various project types\nParticipants will describe how geophysical methods can reduce the risk of unknown subsurface conditions when integrated with invasive exploration methods\nParticipants will explore advantages and limitations of several geophysical methods to predict their potential for success\nParticipants will identify geophysical methods that may be useful for evaluating conditions of existing buildings\n\nPRESENTED BY \nJoel Daniel\, CPG | Senior Geologist | Draper Aden Associates \nJoel Daniel is a Senior Geologist with Draper Aden Associates in their Blacksburg\, Virginia office.  He has 30 years of experience working with environmental and geotechnical engineering firms\, and has extensive experience designing geophysical surveys to address challenges encountered in these industries.  Mr. Daniel’s experience includes designing and performing geophysical surveys throughout the mid-Atlantic and the Midwest\, and unique area such as Kodiak\, Alaska\, Cuba and Qatar.  Mr. Daniel is a licensed geologist in Virginia\, North Carolina (dormant)\, Missouri\, Tennessee and Washington state. \n\n\nRSVP required by 10:00 am on September 2\, 2021\nAIA Members & AIA Triangle Annual Partners: $0 | Non-members: $25\nLink to join Zoom meeting will be emailed to registrants the morning of the program
