He is also the coordinator of the Graduate Concentration in the History and Theory of Architecture. His research examines the operations of transnational networks of housing and planning during the twentieth century within contexts of decolonization\, national liberation\, and globalization\, as well as in relation to discourses and political economies of development. His forthcoming book\, Landed Internationals: Planning Cultures\, the Academy\, and the Making of the Modern Middle East (University of Texas Press\, 2020)\, examines how postwar encounters in housing and planning transformed the dynamics of international development and challenged American modernity. He is a contributor to Aggregate Architectural History Collaborative’s next project entitled\, Systems and the South. He also serves on the editorial board of Southern Cultures. \nErdim’s research has been supported by grants from the Andrew W. Mellon initiative in Urban Landscape Studies at Dumbarton Oaks (fall 2016)\, the Aga Khan Program in Islamic Architecture at MIT (spring 2017)\, and the Fulbright Program (2007-8). Prior to joining NC State\, Erdim received his Ph.D. in the History of Art and Architecture from the University of Virginia and taught as a visiting assistant professor at Mississippi State University.

In 1989 he graduated from the Phillips Exeter Academy\, New Hampshire before going on to study further at the University of Pennsylvania\, graduating in 1993. He also studied in Rome\, Italy as part of the ICCS Research Master’s degree (Master of Arts)\, before in 2002 earning Ph.D from the University of Texas at Austin. Darius is also a Ful­bright Scholar and Amer­i­can Acad­emy of Rome fel­low FAAR’00 and throughout his career has taught in the United States and in Italy directed various archaeological excavations including projects at the Roman Forum in Rome and at Ostia Antica. \nDarius currently lives with his family in Rome. Since 2002\, he has served as Executive Director of the American Institute for Roman Culture\, a non-profit organization that works to promote and defend Rome’s cultural heritage through educational programs\, projects\, public outreach\, conservation\, video and social media. \nIn the US he has appeared as a guest lec­turer\, expert in\, and the host of numer­ous doc­u­men­taries for Dis­cov­ery\, The His­tory Channel\, National Geo­graphic and PBS. In Europe Darius has featured as a guest on several UK (BBC\, Channel 4) documentaries and in Italy as the host of Under Italy on Rai5. \nAs an accessible historian and Roman archaeologist\, Darius is regularly cited in the press; past features include CNN\, Time\, The Guardian and BBC.  \nIn 2017 Darius was recognized as Periscoper of the Year by the Short Awards for his use of live-streaming as a tool for education\, and launched his first podcast series\, Darius Arya Digs.

For over 20 years\, she has thoughtfully and efficiently guided award-winning projects from pre-design through construction administration. As a Project Manager\, she carefully guides key stakeholders through the development of esteemed projects for their communities by crafting a unique design process for each of her clients. For Teri\, coupling her ability to communicate design ideas with meaningful community engagement is essential to her role in the design process. Teri’s talent for leading the architectural design process has been recognized and celebrated throughout her career. After graduating from North Carolina State University. She became one of the first five African American women to become a Registered Architect in the state of NorthCarolina. In 2007\, Teri joined the Freelon Group and rapidly advanced to Senior Associate as a result of her exceptional client management skills. After serving as Lead Project Manager on award-winning projects like the National Center for Civil and Human Rights and EmancipationPark\, she was selected to participate in Perkins+Will’s Leadership Institute and appointed to the firm’s Diversity Council. As an insightful mentor to young architects\, Teri shared her personal and professional experiences as a minority architect during the 2015 National Organization of Minority Architects conference as a seminar panelist. She has also shown her commitment to her community as a Preservation Durham Executive Board Member\, a Durham Rotary Club Member\, a Minister for Stephen Ministries\, and a volunteer with Big Brother/Big Sister of Durham. In addition\, Teri is a member of the Board of Advisors of the United Minority Contractors Association of NorthCarolina as well as a member of the Durham Arts Council’s SmART Resource Board. \n\nElizabeth Caliendo\, AIA | Senior Architect\, HH Architecture \nElizabeth received her Bachelor of Architecture from North Carolina State University’s College of Design. As an active member of the local design community\, she joined the AIA Triangle Board in 2018 and is currently an AIA Triangle Board Member and is Secretary on the AIAT Board Executive Committee and serves as chair of the AIA Triangle Design Awards Task Force. She served six years on the Raleigh Historic Development Commission (RHDC) and is now serving on the RHDC Design Review Advisory Committee. The presentation will also help the design and construction community inform their clients\, such as building owners and facility managers\, on how to provide a safe working environment for all building occupants. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES: \n\nParticipants will be able to review their current building/facility operation and compare to current CDC and OSHA guidelines. The lecture will show best practices for building specifications of interior and exterior materials and how to specify products that have EPD’s and are healthy and low in embodied carbon. A question frequently asked by owners new to the commissioning process is\, “Don’t I already pay for that?”. In this session we will review commissioning according to the industry standard ASHRAE Commissioning Guidelines and North Carolina Energy Code. The participants will develop a better understanding differences between various computational design and energy modeling software and which tools will be best equipped for various stages of the design process.

We will consider recommendations for the potential retrofit of existing buildings for the purpose of making them more effective in containing potential virus exposure. We will also consider potential future modifications in the approach to the design of building HVAC systems\, with special consideration being given to virus containment. Prior to New Affiliates she worked in Europe and the United States\, most recently as an Associate at MOS Architects in New York. Alongside practice\, she frequently teaches design\, history and theory of architecture. She holds a Master of Architecture from Princeton\, where she was awarded the Suzanne Kolarik Underwood Prize for excellence in design and the Stanley J Seeger fellowship; and a Diploma with honors in Architecture and Engineering from the University of Patras in Greece. \nPrior to founding N/A\, Jaffer Kolb worked as a designer in New York\, Chicago and Los Angeles for a range of international studios. He is currently an adjunct assistant professor at Columbia University’s GSAPP\, and was the 2015 Muschenheim Fellow at the University of Michigan’s Taubman College. Previously he worked on the 13th Venice Architecture Biennial under David Chipperfield and before that was the US editor for the Architectural Review. He holds a Master of Architecture from Princeton University\, a Master of Urban Planning from the London School of Economics\, and a Bachelor of Arts in Film Studies from Wesleyan University.

While there\, he led award-winning projects for institutions such as the New Museum of Contemporary Art\, Socrates Sculpture Center\, The Brooklyn Historical Society and The Philadelphia Art Museum in addition to completing a number of private residential commissions. \nA registered Architect in New York State\, Ryan studied at the Architectural Association in London and received his Bachelor of Arts in Visual Arts and Master of Architecture from the College of Design at North Carolina State University. There\, he was co-editor of The Student Publication and was awarded the Faculty Design Prize and Henry Kamphoefner Fellowship for highest graduate achievement. \nRyan is a recipient of the Deborah Norden Prize from The Architectural League of New York\, and a Design Research Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. \nHe is currently a Senior Lecturer at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco\, and has been an invited juror at the University of Southern California\, UC Berkeley\, N.C. State University\, The Architectural League of New York\, and Yale University. \nWork of the Practice has been featured in The New York Times\, T Magazine\, Vogue\, Art Forum\, Art News\, The SF Chronicle\, Cultured and Monocle among others.

Our presentation will include slides of a 93-foot tall panel\, one of our projects\, which at the time of construction was recognized by the Tilt-Up Concrete Association as the tallest panel in the United States. We will also show examples of innovative and unique uses of tilt-up construction on some of our other projects\, as well as illustrate the potential creativity and flexibility that can be achieved through the use of this system through the wide variation in finishes and architectural treatments of the tilt-up wall panels of these projects. \nWe will be able to offer useful information related to constructability\, speed of construction\, general tilt-up construction techniques and the cost effectiveness and other advantages offered by tilt-up compared to other wall systems such as CMU and metal wall studs. Mangum\, P.E.\, President / COO | McVeigh & Mangum Engineering\, Inc. \nWayne serves as President of McVeigh & Mangum Engineering (MME)\, headquartered in Jacksonville\, FL. MME is a multi-discipline firm\, serving their clients through multiple offices in the Southeast. As a registered professional structural engineer\, Wayne has led the design of a variety of building projects including Seven Rivers Presbyterian Church in Lecanto\, Florida. One of the tilt up panels of this project recently held the record for the tallest tilt-up panel in the United States. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology and a Master’s degree in Engineering from the University of Texas.
