This tour will be led by Ellen Cassilly\, FAIA\, Founder of Ellen Cassilly Architects and Father Michael Martin\, O.F.M. Duke University\, Director of Catholic Campus Ministry. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nParticipants will compare the integration of five different art installations on the interior and exterior of the project and assess their successfulness through observation and discussion with the architect and client\nParticipants will be able to examine the constraints of working on a tight urban site and challenges of changing the grade adjacent to existing neighbors as well as water management on the site\nParticipants will observe the challenges and contribute to a discussion of supply chain instability caused by COVID pandemic as related to the entire building process and most especially finished grade veneered plywood for millwork and casework\nParticipants will be able to examine the make up of two sound control strategies for the floor/ceiling connection\, between the quiet rooms of the study and music room\, and the wall/wall connection between the chapel and study.\n\nPRESENTED BY: \nEllen Cassilly\, FAIA | Founder\, Ellen Cassilly Architects \nEllen Cassilly has over 35 years of experience and founded her studio\, Ellen Cassilly Architects\, in 1999. Their projects have contributed to the vibrancy of Durham’s renaissance from Fullsteam Brewery\, Parker and Otis\, and Grub\, to the Kress condominiums and the pavilion in Durham Central Park. Ellen’s personal home Cassilhaus was highlighted in the NYT in 209. In 2018 Ellen was elevated to a Fellow of the AIA. \nFather Michael Martin\, O.F.M | Duke University Director of Catholic Campus Ministry \nFr. Michael Martin\, O.F.M. Conv was named Director of the Duke Catholic Center in August 2010. he has held a variety of teaching\, coaching and administrative positions since his ordination in 1989 including an adjunct faculty position at Xavier University in Cincinnati. He has served on a number of boards and commissions and is a highlighted presenter on strategic issues facing Catholic schools today and the important role of advancement in sustaining the mission of Catholic education. DESCRIPTION:ALL ARE WELCOME! \nAIA Triangle EP/YAF Presents \nVirtual Hard Hat Tour of \nRunnymede Road Residence \nJune 30 | 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm \n1 LU/HSW \nJoin EP/YAF for a virtual hard hat tour through the construction of a residence by Szostak Design at lunchtime on Wednesday\, June 30th. Located amongst modern icons in the Runnymede Rd area of Raleigh\, Szostak Design will present the design and details of the nearly-completed residence.  \nAs with all EP|YAF events\, everyone is welcome! So don’t forget your safety glasses and reflection vests as you join us for this unique virtual hard hat tour – hard hats optional! \nPROGRAM \nThis virtual hard hat tour is focused on the Health\, Safety\, and Welfare of building users by investigating site orientation challenges with daylighting & privacy and maintaining an environmental creek buffer\, exploring iterative design processes during preliminary design and construction of the residence as a Design Build delivery method\, and observing construction administrative challenges and adaptations during a global pandemic. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nParticipants will be able to explore the challenges of coordinating structure\, window systems\, shading devices\, and operable screens to provide seemless egress and access to solar gain & prevailing winds\, using both completed details and construction drawings.\nParticipates will be able to observe the challenges of construction during a global pandemic using anecdotal stories from the team to discuss how the process of construction administration has been adapted.\nParticipants will be able to examine the placement of various residential program needs that allow the response to a dense setting\, by evaluating the decisions for private areas and contributing public areas where necessary.\nParticipants will be able to demonstrate unique site constraints to provide a dwelling unit while maintaining the environmental integrity of a perennial stream bisecting the site\, by assessing existing conditions and the subsequent structure.\n\nPRESENTED BY: \n \nPhil Szostak\, Principal\, Szostak Design\, Inc. \nPhil Szostak has over 40 years of experience in a broad range of architectural design projects. He first opened Philip Szostak Associates (PSA) in 1980\, now Szostak Design\, and demonstrated exceptional abilities in designing projects ranging in scale from small renovations to complex\, multi-million dollar facilities. Phil’s work has been widely acknowledged\, garnering numerous local\, regional and national awards for design excellence over the course of his career. In 2009 he was named a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (AIA)\, in 2010 he was the co-recipient of AIA North Carolina’s Kamphoefner Award for outstanding contributions to modernism in architecture\, and in 2018 he was recognized with the AIA North Carolina Gold Medal. \n \nBrian Driska\, Project Architect\, Szostak Design\, Inc. \nBrian Driska is a talented architect with industry experience that spans design and construction. His approach is to create designs that meet and exceed client goals; designs that are provocative\, logical\, and functional. Drawing from his construction background\, Brian is adept at creating buildings that are a snap to build– doing more with less.
