SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn - The Role of SLAM Technology for Reality Capture & the Metaverse
DESCRIPTION:AIA Triangle Lunch & Learn Program \nSponsored by \n \n\n\n\nAIA Triangle Lunch & Learn\n\n\nSponsored by GPI Geospatial\, Inc.\n\n\nThe Role of SLAM Technology for Reality Capture & the Metaverse\n\n\nMay 2nd\, 2023 | 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM | CE credit pending approval\n\n\nOption to attend in-person or online via Zoom\n\n\nCenter for Architecture and Design (CfAD)\n\n\n14 E. Peace St. | Raleigh\, NC\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGeospatial data is taking a lead role in the development of the eventual metaverse. Highly detailed 3D datasets along with GIS will serve as the backbone of whatever the metaverse will become as the concept continues to take shape. Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) systems simplify data collection and significantly increases the speed by which 3D datasets can be developed. SLAM technology utilizes both lidar and cameras for mapping both indoor and outdoor locations. This emerging approach to reality capture is making it possible to efficiently map robust 3D environments in ways that have been cost-prohibitive in the past. The goal of this presentation is to introduce the fundamentals of SLAM systems and provide a representative sample of real-life use cases.\n\n\nLEARNING OBJECTIVES\n\n\n\n\nParticipants will know the fundamentals of Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) technology by being introduced to core concepts.\nParticipants will identify use cases for indoor mapping and using lidar data to generate BIM models by examining real-life projects.\nParticipants will be able to define reality capture by examining current applications including digital twins.\nParticipants will be able to define high-level concepts of a theoretical metaverse through discussion of possible applications within the A&E industry.\n\n\n\n\nPRESENTED BY\n\n\nJamey Gray\, PLS\, GISP | Senior Geospatial Manager | GPI Geospatial\, Inc.\n\n\nJamey Gray\, PLS\, GISP has 19 years’ experience in surveying\, remote sensing and GIS. SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn - Embodied Carbon as a Performance Metric
DESCRIPTION:AIA Triangle Lunch & Learn Program \nSponsored by \n \n\n\n\nEmbodied Carbon as a Performance Metric\n\n\nThursday\, November 10\, 2022 | 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM | 1 AIA LU/HSW\n\n\nOption to attend in-person or online via Zoom\n\n\nCenter for Architecture & Design | 14 E. Peace Street | Raleigh\, NC\n\n\nLunch will be provided for in-person attendees\n\n\n(Deadline for in-person registration: Wednesday\, November 9 at 10:00 am)\n\n\n\n\nREGISTRATION OPTIONS \nZOOM REGISTRATION ONLY – Register HERE to attend online and receive Zoom link \nIN-PERSON REGISTRATION \n\nAIA Members/AIA Triangle Annual Partners: $0 (RSVP BELOW)\nNon-Members: $35 (PURCHASE TICKET BELOW)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe topic of embodied carbon in the AEC industry has become a critical issue. Buildings alone account for 40% of the global greenhouse gas emissions. Two-thirds of that total impact is from operational emissions while the remainder is from embodied emissions. Embodied emissions include all the emissions required to produce everything that goes into our buildings – the structure\, enclosure and all the materials inside. Historically\, the focus in the design community has been on reducing operational emissions since they represent the majority of the total impact. In response\, the AEC community has been able to reduce operational emissions in the built environment through designing smarter buildings\, as a result the recent focus has shifted to the other one-third of the pie\, embodied carbon. In response to a new focus on embodied carbon\, the USGBC included a new credit under the materials section\, Building Life-Cycle Impact Reduction\, where there is an option to perform a Whole Building Lifecycle Assessment (WBLCA) worth a total of 3 points in v4 and 4 points in LEED v4.1. The goal of the WBLCA is to reduce the embodied impacts of a building by quantifying the environmental impacts of structure and enclosure. This course provides an overview of embodied carbon\, the role that structural engineers play in the sustainable design process\, how design teams can measure and minimize carbon impacts in building systems\, and an understanding of how sustainable structural design integrates with other building systems to reduce overall impact. We will also review Whole Building Life Cycle Assessment and LEED v4 through a recent case study. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nRecognize how different materials contribute to the overall embodied environmental impacts of the structural system\nIdentify design tools to measure embodied carbon\nRecognize which strategies are most effective for minimizing the embodied impacts of construction materials\nCompare the embodied impacts of structural systems to the impacts of building operations\n\n\n\n\nPRESENTED BY \nKelly Roberts\, P.E.\, S.E.\, LEED AP BD+C and Matt O’Callaghan\, PE\, SE \nKelly Roberts is a Principal and Senior Structural Project Manager at Walter P Moore Atlanta. Roberts leads Walter P Moore’s Sustainable Design Community of Practice and is a founding board member of the non-profit material reuse center\, Lifecycle Building Center.  She is founding chair of the NCSEA Sustainability Committee and co-chair of the Atlanta Carbon Leadership Forum. She is immediate Past-President of ACI Georgia and a member of ACI 318 N\, SEI SE 2050 Advisory Council\, USGBC Georgia Market Leadership Board\, AIA Atlanta COTE Steering Committee\, and the USGBC MR Technical Advisory Group. Floorcovering specification sections often do not address the compatibility of the floorcovering system with the type of application and intended service use. This is not done intentionally\, rather it is an innate result of a misunderstanding of sufficient compatibilities of the various types of floorcovering systems within their installed environments. During this presentation\, we will discuss published floorcovering systems installation standards and specifications that will aid the attendee in strengthening their 09 Sections to avoid these incompatibilities. In addition\, identification and categorization of various floorcovering system failures\, immediate and latent\, will be presented\, and how to properly prevent these failures from occurring during the design process for a successful floorcovering system installation. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nIdentify the documents that clearly define proper installation of the floorcovering system.\nRecognize the impact of misspecification of floorcovering systems.\nEvaluate the impact of improper floorcovering systems installation.\nSpecify appropriate ambient site conditions to avoid floorcovering system installation failure.\nAvoid floorcovering systems failures through improper/outdated design specifications.\n\n\n\n\nPRESENTED BY \nMike Nuckolls\, Southeast Regional Manager\, ISE Logik \nIndustry veteran Mike Nuckolls has joined ISE Logik to head up sales and client service in the Southeast. Nuckolls started his flooring career with Shaw Industries and held sales management positions in Residential\, Commercial\, and Shaw Contract. Most recently\, he managed sales for FloorFolio Commercial Flooring. \n“Mike brings a deep understanding of the commercial side of the flooring business and the importance proper moisture mitigation plays in successful installations\,” said David Seland\, founder and CEO of ISE Logik. “He is one of the most highly respected and trusted professionals in flooring.”\n\n\n\nZOOM REGISTRATIONS ONLY – Register HERE to attend online and receive Zoom link \nIN-PERSON REGISTRATION – REGISTER BELOW \n\nRegister below to attend in-person\nDeadline for in-person registration is Wednesday\, November 2 at 10:00 am\nLunch will be provided to in-person registrants\nThe program will begin promptly at 12:00 PM\nRegistration begins at 11:30 AM – Please arrive early to allow time for check-in and lunch
