DESCRIPTION:EP/YAF Hard Hat Tour \nDuke University Catholic Center’s Falcone-Arena House \nSeptember 8 | 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm (1 AIA/HSW credit) \nIn-person tour limited to the first 20 registrants \nThe first 20 registrants are welcome to join us for an in-person tour of the Duke Catholic Center’s Falcone-Arena House. This tour will be led by Ellen Cassilly\, FAIA\, Founder of Ellen Cassilly Architects and Father Michael Martin\, O.F.M. Duke University\, Director of Catholic Campus Ministry. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nParticipants will compare the integration of five different art installations on the interior and exterior of the project and assess their successfulness through observation and discussion with the architect and client\nParticipants will be able to examine the constraints of working on a tight urban site and challenges of changing the grade adjacent to existing neighbors as well as water management on the site\nParticipants will observe the challenges and contribute to a discussion of supply chain instability caused by COVID pandemic as related to the entire building process and most especially finished grade veneered plywood for millwork and casework\nParticipants will be able to examine the make up of two sound control strategies for the floor/ceiling connection\, between the quiet rooms of the study and music room\, and the wall/wall connection between the chapel and study.\n\nPRESENTED BY: \nEllen Cassilly\, FAIA | Founder\, Ellen Cassilly Architects \nEllen Cassilly has over 35 years of experience and founded her studio\, Ellen Cassilly Architects\, in 1999. Their projects have contributed to the vibrancy of Durham’s renaissance from Fullsteam Brewery\, Parker and Otis\, and Grub\, to the Kress condominiums and the pavilion in Durham Central Park. Ellen’s personal home Cassilhaus was highlighted in the NYT in 209. In 2018 Ellen was elevated to a Fellow of the AIA. \nFather Michael Martin\, O.F.M | Duke University Director of Catholic Campus Ministry \nFr. Michael Martin\, O.F.M. Conv was named Director of the Duke Catholic Center in August 2010. he has held a variety of teaching\, coaching and administrative positions since his ordination in 1989 including an adjunct faculty position at Xavier University in Cincinnati. He has served on a number of boards and commissions and is a highlighted presenter on strategic issues facing Catholic schools today and the important role of advancement in sustaining the mission of Catholic education.
