SUMMARY:Back to Basics: Building Science 101 for Building Enclosures
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n  \nMarch Meeting for the Building Enclosure Council – Research Triangle\nBack to Basics: Building Science 101 for Building Enclosures \nDoes the phrase hygric bouyancy make you think of the ocean rather than airflow?  Are you a deer in the headlights when someone mentions vapor diffusion?  Fear not.  The Building Enclosure Council of the Research Triangle\, in conjunction with the AIA RT Emerging Professionals\, is starting a “Back to Basics” series that will remind you of the simple physics we enjoyed as young people (mousetrap cars anyone?) but have sometimes forgotten amidst the complexity that is the building industry in our adult careers.  Let us return to that childlike joy of understanding and lightbulb moments together and remember that fundamentals are fun! \nJoin us as Amy Gelsone leads a presentation on the fundamentals of building science where we will discuss: \n\nGuiding principle of equilibrium as it relates to building science.\nHow the molecular sizes of bulk water\, air\, and water vapor pertain to control mechanisms.\nHow air flows throughout building and potential related problems.\nVarious modes of heat transfer and resulting impacts on enclosure performance.\n\nThursday March 27th\, 2025\n5pm-7pm\nLittle Office\n410 Blackwell Street\, Suite 10\, Durham NC 27701 \n1 AIA CEU/HWS \nFree! SUMMARY:CANCELLED - COTE Committee Panel Discussion: The Future of Architecture and Environmental Sustainability 2.0
DESCRIPTION:JUNE 28TH PROGRAM CANCELLED \nWATCH FOR NEW DATE!\n\n\nCOTE PANEL DISCUSSION\n\n\nThe Future of Architecture & Environmental Sustainability 2.0\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis panel discussion is a continuation of a conversation on the future of architecture and environmental sustainability that was first held in 2021 by AIA North Carolina. Moderated by Matt Barnett\, AIA\, Senior Architect\, LS3P and the Chair of AIA North Carolina’s Environmental Sustainability/AIA 2030 Task Force\, this panel of architects\, educators and engineers – all of whom have demonstrated not only a commitment to the AIA National 2030 Challenge and are working diligently to ensure their work aligns with these mandates – who will dive into the conversation about how to implement the tactics and strategies that will move the profession of architecture forward and place architects at the forefront of climate change and climate mitigation efforts.\n\n\n \n\n\nLEARNING OBJECTIVES\n\n\n1. Participants will understand how to incorporate discussions about ethics and how these conversations inform decision-making regarding architecture and environmental stewardship\n\n\n2. Participants will analyze strategies and tactics used to engage engineers during conceptual design to better communicate desired environmental sustainability outcomes and inform building performance\n\n\n3. Participants will implement business practices and project procurement influences throughout the design and building processes to ensure sustainable work\n\n\n4. Participants will define educational influences on practice and culture surrounding environmental stewardship\n\n\n \n\n\nPANEL PARTICIPANTS\n\n\nKeith Pehl\, CEO\, Optima Engineering \n Laura Gwyn\, AIA\, Principal\, Managing Partner\, Perkins&Will \n David Hill\, FAIA\, Head of the School of Architecture and Professor of Architecture\, NC State University\, and Co-Director\, Coastal Dynamics Design Lab \nMODERATOR: Matt Barnett\, AIA\, Senior Associate\, LS3P\n\n\n\n\nREGISTRATION INFORMATION \nAttend in person only (no Zoom option) \n\nAIA Members/AIA Triangle Annual Partners: $0 (RSVP required)\nNon-Members: $35 (Purchase ticket below)\n\nIN-PERSON \n\nThe program will begin promptly at 4:30 pm\nCheck-in begins at 4:00 pm\nFace masks are optional\n\nPARKING \n\nParking is available on the South Parking Deck located at 705 WILLARD STREET\nDURHAM\, NC 27701\nLittle Diversified is on the first floor of the Fowler Building – across Blackwell St. from the Bulls Athletic Park – enter through the Fowler lobby – Little Diversified is located directly to your left.
