SUMMARY:COTE Design Excellence Lecture Series - Design for Community (Part 1) Social Equity
DESCRIPTION:LECTURE 2: DESIGN FOR COMMUNITY (PART 1) SOCIAL EQUITY \nOctober 27\, 2021 | 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm | 1.5 HSW \n\n\nAIA members/AIA Triangle Annual Partners/Students: Register in advance for Zoom meeting HERE\nNon-members only: Pay $35 non-member fee below and register in advance for Zoom meeting HERE\nAfter registering through Zoom\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting and option to add to your calendar.\n\n\nDesign for Community (Part 1) Social Equity \nAs the AIA COTE framework states\, “Sustainability is inextricably tied to the wellness of communities.”  Understanding how all members of the community are impacted by the design of both public and private buildings is key to the long-term success of the health of any size community of people. Design is greatly enhanced by hearing and understanding all perspectives which then helps to create equitable and healthy design solutions for the public. This lecture will focus on the process of listening\, engaging and understanding the issues to create socially equitable design solutions.   \nSpeakers \nJune Grant\, FAIA (blink!Lab) | Zakiya Wiggins\, AIA (Jacobs Wyper) | Zach Sunderland\, AIA (Haven Ventures) \nLearning Objectives \n\nParticipants will identify the principles for design for community at the local\, regional\, and global level.\nParticipants will explore the strategies for community engagement in the design process.\nParticipants will appraise different design approaches to create designs that elevate social equity for all members of the community.\nParticipants will analyze case studies of how to lead a project that incorporates effective community engagement in the design process and address issues of social inequity.

SUMMARY:COTE Design Excellence Lecture Series: Design for Change - Climate and Resilient Design
DESCRIPTION:LECTURE 1: DESIGN FOR CHANGE – CLIMATE CHANGE AND RESILIENT DESIGN \nOctober 13\, 2021 | 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm | 1.5 HSW \n\n\nAIA members/AIA Triangle Annual Partners/Students: Register in advance for Zoom meeting HERE\nNon-members: Pay $35 non-member fee below and register in advance for Zoom meeting HERE\nAfter registering through Zoom\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting and option to add to your calendar.\n\n\nLecture 1: Design for Change – Climate Change and Resilient Design \nIn order for architects to have the greatest impact on climate change\, how we design for energy performance and what we specify for building materials will be critical for lowering operational and embodied carbon. Equally important will be how our buildings are designed to be resilient to withstand the increasing threats of extreme weather and survivability during severe weather events.  This session will focus on the design process to create sustainable buildings that are not only energy efficient but also resilient and adaptable over time. \nSpeakers \nMara Baum\, AIA (Dialog) and Gavin Smith (UNC\, NCSU)\, Siassia Likibi \nLearning objectives \n\nParticipants will explore the challenges of climate change and how the design process must adapt to address the increasing events of extreme weather and sea level rise.\nParticipants will discover the key design issues such as flexibility\, passive survivability\, and resilient design to address the many current and future challenges.\nParticipants will assess the interconnected relationship between sustainable design and resilient design and the importance of both in building design.\nParticipants will evaluate case studies that give the participants an understanding of various sustainable and resilient design solutions to address the need to design for change.

SUMMARY:Virtual Lunch & Learn: The Role of Geophysics in Assessing Site Conditions
DESCRIPTION:AIA Triangle Virtual Lunch & Learn Program \nSponsored by \n \nThe Role of Geophysics in Assessing Site Conditions \n and Reducing Risk in Site Design \nSeptember 2 | 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm | 1 AIA LU Credit \nAIA Members and AIA Triangle Annual Partners: $0 | Non-members: $25 \nThis presentation will explore how geophysical methods can be utilized to reduce risk due to unknown conditions during site design.  The use of geophysics in conjunction with invasive exploration can be a cost-effective means of providing substantially more information than that obtained with additional invasive methods.  Understanding the advantages and limitations of geophysical methods helps guide their use and chance of success\, and also helps manage expectations of what can be provided.  Several methods will be reviewed with examples of applications\, particularly with respect to assessment of existing buildings. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nParticipants will explain geophysics and how it can be utilized in various project types\nParticipants will describe how geophysical methods can reduce the risk of unknown subsurface conditions when integrated with invasive exploration methods\nParticipants will explore advantages and limitations of several geophysical methods to predict their potential for success\nParticipants will identify geophysical methods that may be useful for evaluating conditions of existing buildings\n\nPRESENTED BY \nJoel Daniel\, CPG | Senior Geologist | Draper Aden Associates \nJoel Daniel is a Senior Geologist with Draper Aden Associates in their Blacksburg\, Virginia office.  He has 30 years of experience working with environmental and geotechnical engineering firms\, and has extensive experience designing geophysical surveys to address challenges encountered in these industries.  Mr. Daniel’s experience includes designing and performing geophysical surveys throughout the mid-Atlantic and the Midwest\, and unique area such as Kodiak\, Alaska\, Cuba and Qatar.  Mr. Daniel is a licensed geologist in Virginia\, North Carolina (dormant)\, Missouri\, Tennessee and Washington state. \n\n\nRSVP required by 10:00 am on September 2\, 2021\nAIA Members & AIA Triangle Annual Partners: $0 | Non-members: $25\nLink to join Zoom meeting will be emailed to registrants the morning of the program
