Equally important will be how our buildings are designed to be resilient to withstand the increasing threats of extreme weather and survivability during severe weather events.  This session will focus on the design process to create sustainable buildings that are not only energy efficient but also resilient and adaptable over time. \nSpeakers \nMara Baum\, AIA (Dialog) and Gavin Smith (UNC\, NCSU)\, Siassia Likibi \nLearning objectives \n\nParticipants will explore the challenges of climate change and how the design process must adapt to address the increasing events of extreme weather and sea level rise.\nParticipants will discover the key design issues such as flexibility\, passive survivability\, and resilient design to address the many current and future challenges.\nParticipants will assess the interconnected relationship between sustainable design and resilient design and the importance of both in building design.\nParticipants will evaluate case studies that give the participants an understanding of various sustainable and resilient design solutions to address the need to design for change.

Michael is responsible for fostering a culture of design excellence and has over 20 years of experience in a range of project scopes\, from master planning to detailed design. Michael influences a thoughtful and strategic design approach with an awareness of sustainable principles. This process results in the creation of spaces and places that balance the needs of the users\, clients and the environment.  Michael utilizes both analog and digital sketching techniques to analyze design strategies\, communicate ideas and inspire others. \nMatt Evans\, PLA\, LEED\, AP | Associate Director of Design\nMatthew is the Associate Director of Design at Stewart and a landscape architect with more than nine years of experience. With 20 years of experience as a professional violinist\, Matthew brings a unique perspective to design process\, design thinking\, and practice that embraces both the technical and the expressive. He has led the design process on a wide range of project types including campus design\, urban design/urban infill\, urban open space\, athletic park design\, and places for play. \nElizabeth Lawandales\, PLA\, SITES AP\nElizabeth Lawandales is a Project Landscape Architect with more than 7 years of experience.  She strives to promote healthy ecosystems by way of sustainable infrastructure and thoughtful design solutions. As a SITES Accredited Professional\, she brings a holistic perspective to the design process at Stewart. DESCRIPTION:ALL ARE WELCOME! \nAIA Triangle EP/YAF Presents \nVirtual Hard Hat Tour of \nRunnymede Road Residence \nJune 30 | 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm \n1 LU/HSW \nJoin EP/YAF for a virtual hard hat tour through the construction of a residence by Szostak Design at lunchtime on Wednesday\, June 30th. Located amongst modern icons in the Runnymede Rd area of Raleigh\, Szostak Design will present the design and details of the nearly-completed residence.  \nAs with all EP|YAF events\, everyone is welcome! So don’t forget your safety glasses and reflection vests as you join us for this unique virtual hard hat tour – hard hats optional! \nPROGRAM \nThis virtual hard hat tour is focused on the Health\, Safety\, and Welfare of building users by investigating site orientation challenges with daylighting & privacy and maintaining an environmental creek buffer\, exploring iterative design processes during preliminary design and construction of the residence as a Design Build delivery method\, and observing construction administrative challenges and adaptations during a global pandemic. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nParticipants will be able to explore the challenges of coordinating structure\, window systems\, shading devices\, and operable screens to provide seemless egress and access to solar gain & prevailing winds\, using both completed details and construction drawings.\nParticipates will be able to observe the challenges of construction during a global pandemic using anecdotal stories from the team to discuss how the process of construction administration has been adapted.\nParticipants will be able to examine the placement of various residential program needs that allow the response to a dense setting\, by evaluating the decisions for private areas and contributing public areas where necessary.\nParticipants will be able to demonstrate unique site constraints to provide a dwelling unit while maintaining the environmental integrity of a perennial stream bisecting the site\, by assessing existing conditions and the subsequent structure.\n\nPRESENTED BY: \n \nPhil Szostak\, Principal\, Szostak Design\, Inc. \nPhil Szostak has over 40 years of experience in a broad range of architectural design projects. He first opened Philip Szostak Associates (PSA) in 1980\, now Szostak Design\, and demonstrated exceptional abilities in designing projects ranging in scale from small renovations to complex\, multi-million dollar facilities. Phil’s work has been widely acknowledged\, garnering numerous local\, regional and national awards for design excellence over the course of his career. In 2009 he was named a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (AIA)\, in 2010 he was the co-recipient of AIA North Carolina’s Kamphoefner Award for outstanding contributions to modernism in architecture\, and in 2018 he was recognized with the AIA North Carolina Gold Medal. \n \nBrian Driska\, Project Architect\, Szostak Design\, Inc. \nBrian Driska is a talented architect with industry experience that spans design and construction. His approach is to create designs that meet and exceed client goals; designs that are provocative\, logical\, and functional. Drawing from his construction background\, Brian is adept at creating buildings that are a snap to build– doing more with less.
