SUMMARY:Virtual Lunch & Learn - Design and Collaboration in a Virtual World
DESCRIPTION:AIA Triangle Virtual Lunch & Learn \nSponsored by \n \nDesign and Collaboration in a Virtual World \nSeptember 21 | 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm | 1 AIA LU credit \nAIA Member/AIA Triangle Annual Partners: $0 | Non-members: $25 \nREGISTER IN ADVANCE FOR ZOOM MEETING HERE \nTo create more equitable ideas\, we need to create an inclusive design process with multiple and sometimes conflicting points of views.  Our ever-evolving remote work situation is a potential danger to forcing our design process and ideas to become more siloed.  Equitable access to design technology coupled with the intentional incorporation of virtual tools will help us bridge the creativity and collaboration gap caused by the physical separation of our teams. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nParticipants will discover how drawing still matters in virtual design and collaboration\nParticipants will explore virtual tools and techniques for design and collaboration\nParticipants will understand what we have learned through this year of drawing and collaboration\nParticipants will consider how virtual collaboration translates into a hybrid office model\n\nPRESENTED BY: \nMichael Batts\, PLA\, LEED\, AP | Practice Leader\, Vice President \nMichael Batts\, ASLA\, leads the Landscape Architecture practice at Stewart in Raleigh/Durham and Charlotte\, North Carolina. Michael is responsible for fostering a culture of design excellence and has over 20 years of experience in a range of project scopes\, from master planning to detailed design. Michael influences a thoughtful and strategic design approach with an awareness of sustainable principles. This process results in the creation of spaces and places that balance the needs of the users\, clients and the environment.  Michael utilizes both analog and digital sketching techniques to analyze design strategies\, communicate ideas and inspire others. \nMatt Evans\, PLA\, LEED\, AP | Associate Director of Design\nMatthew is the Associate Director of Design at Stewart and a landscape architect with more than nine years of experience. With 20 years of experience as a professional violinist\, Matthew brings a unique perspective to design process\, design thinking\, and practice that embraces both the technical and the expressive. He has led the design process on a wide range of project types including campus design\, urban design/urban infill\, urban open space\, athletic park design\, and places for play. \nElizabeth Lawandales\, PLA\, SITES AP\nElizabeth Lawandales is a Project Landscape Architect with more than 7 years of experience.  She strives to promote healthy ecosystems by way of sustainable infrastructure and thoughtful design solutions. As a SITES Accredited Professional\, she brings a holistic perspective to the design process at Stewart. She has enjoyed working on a variety of projects ranging from large scale urban design and transit corridor studies to detailed amenity spaces and rooftop gardens. \n\n\nAIA members/AIA Triangle Annual Partners: Register in advance for Zoom meeting HERE\nNon-members only: Pay $25 non-member fee below and register in advance for Zoom meeting HERE

SUMMARY:Virtual Lunch & Learn: The Role of Geophysics in Assessing Site Conditions
DESCRIPTION:AIA Triangle Virtual Lunch & Learn Program \nSponsored by \n \nThe Role of Geophysics in Assessing Site Conditions \n and Reducing Risk in Site Design \nSeptember 2 | 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm | 1 AIA LU Credit \nAIA Members and AIA Triangle Annual Partners: $0 | Non-members: $25 \nThis presentation will explore how geophysical methods can be utilized to reduce risk due to unknown conditions during site design.  The use of geophysics in conjunction with invasive exploration can be a cost-effective means of providing substantially more information than that obtained with additional invasive methods.  Understanding the advantages and limitations of geophysical methods helps guide their use and chance of success\, and also helps manage expectations of what can be provided.  Several methods will be reviewed with examples of applications\, particularly with respect to assessment of existing buildings. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \n\nParticipants will explain geophysics and how it can be utilized in various project types\nParticipants will describe how geophysical methods can reduce the risk of unknown subsurface conditions when integrated with invasive exploration methods\nParticipants will explore advantages and limitations of several geophysical methods to predict their potential for success\nParticipants will identify geophysical methods that may be useful for evaluating conditions of existing buildings\n\nPRESENTED BY \nJoel Daniel\, CPG | Senior Geologist | Draper Aden Associates \nJoel Daniel is a Senior Geologist with Draper Aden Associates in their Blacksburg\, Virginia office.  He has 30 years of experience working with environmental and geotechnical engineering firms\, and has extensive experience designing geophysical surveys to address challenges encountered in these industries.  Mr. Daniel’s experience includes designing and performing geophysical surveys throughout the mid-Atlantic and the Midwest\, and unique area such as Kodiak\, Alaska\, Cuba and Qatar.  Mr. Daniel is a licensed geologist in Virginia\, North Carolina (dormant)\, Missouri\, Tennessee and Washington state. \n\n\nRSVP required by 10:00 am on September 2\, 2021\nAIA Members & AIA Triangle Annual Partners: $0 | Non-members: $25\nLink to join Zoom meeting will be emailed to registrants the morning of the program

SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn - Contracts and Insurance 101
DESCRIPTION:AIA Triangle Virtual Lunch & Learn \nSponsored by \n \nContracts and Insurance 101 \nMay 27 | 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm | 1 LU credit \nAIA Triangle Members and AIA Triangle Annual Partners: $0 | Non-members: $25 \nIn a world of contracts and insurance\, this program will answer some of the most important questions architects may have. What requirements should architects be looking for in contracts and certificates of insurance?  What are the key elements in a certificate of insurance and what is their significance?  What are some of the key contract provisions to watch for\, both in prime agreements and in sub consulting agreements? \nLearning Objectives \n\nArchitects who are just beginning to negotiate contracts will learn how to identify issues of key importance.\nArchitects with more experience in negotiating contracts will learn new ways to better understand the issues and explain them to clients and consultants.\nAll participants will discover emerging risks and requirements and gain more clarity on how to navigate them.\nAll participants will become more familiar with the language of industry standard documents and the process by which they serve all project stakeholders fairly.\n\nPresented by \nBarbara Sable\, Director of Client Engagement and Risk Management\, Nexus Professional Risk \n A New Jersey native\, graduate of Northwestern “Go Cats!”\, Director of Client Engagement and Risk Management\, Barb joined Nexus in 2020. With 35+ years in the insurance industry\, Barb has earned the nickname Big Sister as she is always looking to offer words of wisdom and sound advice for clients and colleagues. With a BA in Mathematics\, Barb was attracted to working with A&E firms as her degree intersected nicely with design. A full day for Barb would include a hike along the C&O canal\, hearing a client say “Thanks! That’s really helpful”\, and raising funds for her favorite nonprofits. Always looking at the sweeter side of life\, her first job was working at a family-owned store and getting paid in candy and ice cream. Good luck reaching Barb on June 20th as it’s likely she and her husband\, Craig\, will be enjoying the longest day of the year with Ruthie their English Pointer. \nStephen Agnew\, Principal\, IMCI \nNative of Charlotte\, North Carolina\, graduate of UNC Charlotte\, Principal at IMCI\, and the team’s Chief Tea Drinker. You can catch him in the early mornings\, holed up in a local coffee shop\, sipping tea and focusing on a contract review or company project. Stephen is a relationship builder by nature; his top Strength is Developer so he sees nothing but potential in others and likes to invest in their growth. He is a voracious reader and podcast junkie\, regularly sharing introspective conversations about a wide array of topics with colleagues and clients alike. Stephen is ready and willing to answer all your insurance questions — on any day other than the first day of March Madness. He is the proud father of a son and a daughter. \n\n\nAIA members and AIAT Annual Partners: $0 | Non-members $25\nOnline program registration required for continuing education credit\nZoom link will be emailed to registrants\nDeadline to register is 10:00 am on May 27\, 2021\n\n
