SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn: Integration of Acoustic Control in Lighting Fixtures
DESCRIPTION:AIA Triangle Virtual Lunch & Learn Program \nSponsored by \n \nIntegration of Acoustic Control in Lighting Fixtures  \nJune 22 | 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm | 1 LU/HSW \nContemporary interior design has led to an increase in open spaces\, unfinished ceilings\, glass walls and hard flooring. With an increase in design of spaces having unfinished ceilings\, hard ceilings\, and glass walls\, spaces can become loud and noisy for occupants and that distraction decreases productivity\, employee morale\, and customer satisfaction.  By addressing the acoustics in a space\, the design intent can be achieved while also providing a more appealing environment for those in the space. This presentation will provide information about how the integration of acoustic control in lighting fixtures can be part of the solution. \nLEARNING OBJECTIVES \nParticipants will assess the effects of noise in the workplace \nParticipants will discover the basics of acoustics \nParticipants will determine the quality of sound environment \nParticipants will determine effective integration of acoustic control in lighting fixture design \nPRESENTED BY \nScott Stetler\, Architectural Specification Manager\, Eureka Lighting \nScott Stetler is the Architectural Specification Manager at Eureka Lighting / Acuity Brands for the Eastern US region.  Scott holds a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Design from Purdue University\, located in West Lafayette\, Indiana. Scott has 30+ years of experience in the commercial architectural lighting field and that experience includes extensive knowledge of the distribution side of the lighting industry\, as well as being a manufacturers’ representative for 20+ years\, and regional sales manager for over 12 years.  Scott was previously certified as an AIA Passport Provider while employed by Lightolier in New York City\, where he conducted AIA presentations to top tier design firms and IALD Lighting Designers.  Scott has been awarded an IES Section Award for the Capitol Products project he designed located in Kentland\, Indiana and has served as a guest design critic at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn\, NY in conjunction with the lighting designer Markus Early. \n  \n\n\nOnline program registration required for continuing education credit\nAIA members and AIA Triangle Annual Partners: $0 | Non-members: $25\nZoom link will be emailed to registrants the morning of the program\nDeadline to register is 10:00 am on June 22nd

SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn: Incorporating the forgotten thermal benefits of brick
DESCRIPTION:AIA Triangle Lunch and Learn Program \nSponsored by: \n \nIncorporating the forgotten thermal benefits of brick \nJune 8 | 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm | 1 LU/HSW \nAIA members and AIA Triangle Annual Partners: $0 | Non-member: $25 \nWhile frequently chosen for aesthetics and durability\, clay brick is not often considered when energy efficiency is a primary concern\, even though it historically played a significant role in occupant comfort before widespread use of HVAC systems. This course discusses the basics of heat transfer\, relevant energy code provisions for walls\, and how current research by the National Brick Research Center demonstrates the role that brick veneer can play in meeting or exceeding energy requirements in modern wall assemblies. \nLearning Objectives \n\nIndicate how wall assemblies have changed throughout history and identify the thermal performance contribution of each component in the assembly.\nDescribe the impact of thermal mass\, vented airspace\, and reflective insulation on energy usage and code requirements.\nExplain the differences in the code compliance paths and how mass walls\, frame walls\, and vented claddings are considered by the energy code.\nCompare the dynamic thermal performance of wall assemblies with anchored brick veneer to wall assemblies with other claddings based on the results of contemporary research.\n\nPresented by \nZach Booker\, EIT\, Engineer\, Brick Industry Association \nAfter graduating from James Madison University in 2016 with a BS in Engineering\, Zach joined the BIA Engineering & Research (E&R) Team. SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn - Contracts and Insurance 101
DESCRIPTION:AIA Triangle Virtual Lunch & Learn \nSponsored by \n \nContracts and Insurance 101 \nMay 27 | 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm | 1 LU credit \nAIA Triangle Members and AIA Triangle Annual Partners: $0 | Non-members: $25 \nIn a world of contracts and insurance\, this program will answer some of the most important questions architects may have. What requirements should architects be looking for in contracts and certificates of insurance?  What are the key elements in a certificate of insurance and what is their significance?  What are some of the key contract provisions to watch for\, both in prime agreements and in sub consulting agreements? \nLearning Objectives \n\nArchitects who are just beginning to negotiate contracts will learn how to identify issues of key importance.\nArchitects with more experience in negotiating contracts will learn new ways to better understand the issues and explain them to clients and consultants.\nAll participants will discover emerging risks and requirements and gain more clarity on how to navigate them.\nAll participants will become more familiar with the language of industry standard documents and the process by which they serve all project stakeholders fairly.\n\nPresented by \nBarbara Sable\, Director of Client Engagement and Risk Management\, Nexus Professional Risk \n A New Jersey native\, graduate of Northwestern “Go Cats!”\, Director of Client Engagement and Risk Management\, Barb joined Nexus in 2020. With 35+ years in the insurance industry\, Barb has earned the nickname Big Sister as she is always looking to offer words of wisdom and sound advice for clients and colleagues. With a BA in Mathematics\, Barb was attracted to working with A&E firms as her degree intersected nicely with design. A full day for Barb would include a hike along the C&O canal\, hearing a client say “Thanks! That’s really helpful”\, and raising funds for her favorite nonprofits. Always looking at the sweeter side of life\, her first job was working at a family-owned store and getting paid in candy and ice cream. Good luck reaching Barb on June 20th as it’s likely she and her husband\, Craig\, will be enjoying the longest day of the year with Ruthie their English Pointer. \nStephen Agnew\, Principal\, IMCI \nNative of Charlotte\, North Carolina\, graduate of UNC Charlotte\, Principal at IMCI\, and the team’s Chief Tea Drinker.
