Part Five – The Money Side of Politics and its Influence on Legislative Action
In many respects, finding rhyme and reason for some of the laws proposed by our NC Legislators is like a day at a traveling carnival. Around every corner there is a surprise. One carnival barker challenging you to a game of skill, take a chance to win a stuffed bunny, another enticing you to take a spin on a roller coaster.
A case in point was my discovery of Senate Bill 327, published as “An Act to Enact the North Carolina Bitcoin Reserve and Investment Act.” It authorizes the State Treasurer to invest up to “ten percent of public funds” in bitcoin strategies to position North Carolina “as a leader in state-level cryptocurrency adoption.” Personally, Warren Buffet saying he wouldn’t buy a nickel’s worth of cryptocurrency “because it has no value,” was enough for me to red flag Crypto. However, knowing it was sponsored by Senate Majority Whip Todd Johnson makes it likely that it will in fact move from the “Rules and Operations of the Senate Committee” and could well become law, taking our state funds on that coaster ride.

How great it is to be a part of the Triangle! As the place I have called home since I was less than a year old, I am grateful to live and work in the Triangle as a designer and contribute to the growth of this area. My family has long ties to Raleigh and has seen the city and everything around it grow exponentially over many decades, making it especially humbling to have a hand in shaping the future of this area. I chose architecture because it embraces the intersection of people, spaces, history, and evolving needs. Architecture offers us the ability to bring all these elements together through design.

As a second-generation Asian American woman raised in North Carolina, my path into architecture wasn’t always visible, but it was guided by curiosity, creativity, and a desire to build something meaningful. My grandfather, who nurtured my love for drawing and making things from a young age, planted the earliest seeds of that dream. He showed me that imagination was worth cultivating.

My father inspired me to become an architect. Born in China and educated in the US as a mechanical engineer, he always included tours of interesting buildings in our travels. There is a sweet photo of our family taken in front of the Guggenheim in the early 60’s. As Chinese immigrants, my parents’ took special pride in the success of other immigrants and I.M. Pei was highly regarded in their circle of friends. I did my studies in Philadelphia and Boston moving to the Triangle in 1987. Upon arrival, I realized how far I had stepped outside my comfort zone.

As one the oldest vocations in the world, architecture brings such a magnificent diversity of perspectives together, resulting in creating uniquely crafted environments for the people they serve. I found my way to architecture through seeing how people interacted in public spaces like where they gathered for a group photo or perhaps retreated for a quiet moment. Creating that ‘sense of place’ is something most designers strive for, and I am happy to share a bit about my journey within the architectural profession.
