A catenary is a curve that is found throughout nature and the built world. This course presents the history of catenaries in architectural design and examines the relationship between catenary systems and lighting. We discuss engineering and environmental factors, types of catenary lighting layouts and real examples of catenary lighting installations from around the world.

Composite materials have been used for thousands of years and new applications are identified each year. As one of the first modern composite materials, fiberglass is at the forefront of this innovation. The resiliency and durability of fiberglass are well-established in many diverse industries and for numerous manufacturing purposes. This course will familiarize you with the basic aspects of fiberglass composites, specifically pultruded fiberglass, and target their usefulness and environmental advantages in the window and door industry.
Owners look to you for products that help buildings look better longer. Greater expectations for space utilization and project design are reframing how traditional building products should contribute to the efficient use of resources and promote well-being for the occupant.
This course applies LED technology to the lighting of vertical surfaces. The course first looks at a series of applications to show how vertical illumination affects spatial brightness and perception, energy utilization and occupant comfort. We then consider lighting strategies for lighting different surfaces. Finally, we identify appropriate lighting equipment for each approach and offer guidelines for locating luminaires for effective vertical illumination.
During this presentation, we will discuss sustainability and what it means; drawing the attendee into a clear discussion of how sustainability relates to LEED, Lean Construction, Green Building, and process improvement. Inconsistencies with current specification processes related to concrete moisture as compared to the tenets of sustainability will be exposed, with clear recommendations given as to how the specifying professional can resolve these disconnects.
Light plays a crucial role in defining how we experience the built environment. Yet, "good" lighting can seem difficult to achieve behind formulaic principles and technical jargon. This course seeks to demystify lighting techniques and give frameworks for approaching different aspects of lighting design. We'll also introduce a few tips that can be used as tools to help attain a well-designed project that inspires.
In order to get the most out of our buildings we must consider factors like water control and thermal movement. It’s also critical to consider the environment in our designs; we can use material selection and panel sizing to help benefit the surrounding world for a more sustainable future. Buildings must also be visually appealing. In this presentation, we will explore how to take material that is seemingly boring square metal and transform it into something stunning.
