Back to Basics: Building Science 101 for Building Enclosures

March 27 | 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

March Meeting for the Building Enclosure Council – Research Triangle
Back to Basics: Building Science 101 for Building Enclosures

Does the phrase hygric bouyancy make you think of the ocean rather than airflow?  Are you a deer in the headlights when someone mentions vapor diffusion?  Fear not.  The Building Enclosure Council of the Research Triangle, in conjunction with the AIA RT Emerging Professionals, is starting a “Back to Basics” series that will remind you of the simple physics we enjoyed as young people (mousetrap cars anyone?) but have sometimes forgotten amidst the complexity that is the building industry in our adult careers.  Let us return to that childlike joy of understanding and lightbulb moments together and remember that fundamentals are fun!

Join us as Amy Gelsone leads a presentation on the fundamentals of building science where we will discuss:

  1. Guiding principle of equilibrium as it relates to building science.
  2. How the molecular sizes of bulk water, air, and water vapor pertain to control mechanisms.
  3. How air flows throughout building and potential related problems.
  4. Various modes of heat transfer and resulting impacts on enclosure performance.
