Design for Community (Part 2) Urban Design Principles

Picking up from Design for Community (Part 1) Social Equity, this lecture will continue the discussion on how architecture plays a role in shaping our communities and the role urban design principles can play in elevating the design of our buildings. This lecture will examine what makes a good urban building and how can architecture contribute to the success of our cities?  Further, how does the design of our streets, public paths, parks and public spaces influence the health of our cities and community? The focus will be on how our architectural design process can respond to urban design principles to make for a more vibrant, accessible and just community.

Learning Objectives

• Participants will acquire the principles for design for community and how they impact the local, regional, and global level.
• Participants will examine and evaluate the principles of urban design in the shaping of buildings as well as streets, paths, parks and public spaces.
• Participants will compare the different approaches to maximizing opportunities for walkable communities and increasing accessibility for all people.
• Participants will analyze various case studies of how to lead a project that incorporates good urban design principles that address issues of accessibility.
