BUILDING SCIENCE TOOLS IN THE DESIGN PROCESS
SPEAKERS: Andrea Love (Payette), John Nichols (Moseley), Brian Turner (Clark Nexsen), Will Alphin (Redesign)
Design firms have changed significantly in the last decade to be more focused on sustainable high-performance design which has led to the development of building science groups, performance specialists, and sustainable / integrative design groups that focus on improving building performance and reducing the operational carbon. This session will focus on the role of building science in the design process and examine tools and software that are being used by firms to track performance metrics. It will also offer a window into how local small, medium and large firms are approaching the same challenge.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Participants will calculate the challenge of what it means to get to net zero for operational carbon.
Participants will assess how building science plays a central role in addressing the net-zero challenge and how it integrates into the design process for tracking metrics for high-performance and net-zero operational design.
Participants will discover the different metrics to track and how best to track them to elevate high-performance design whether you are in a small, medium or large firm.
Participants will examine different building science tools for energy modeling and tracking sustainability goals. The participants will develop a better understanding differences between various computational design and energy modeling software and which tools will be best equipped for various stages of the design process.
