A tour of the construction of Raleigh Iron Works – a mixed-use development in Raleigh, North Carolina. This district will be at the core of growth in Raleigh, working to tie innovation and history together. Raleigh Iron Works utilizes two existing, structurally unique warehouses and reimagines them into something new for locals and visitors alike to enjoy. Potential uses include restaurant, retail, office, residential, and more. This hard hat tour will walk participants through the active construction site to discuss the progress and process of this project.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Participants will discuss the challenges of renovating an existing site, based on anecdotal stories from the construction team regarding research on existing utilities and how that has impacted the construction approach
  • Participants will evaluate the process of designing for a mix of uses, understanding the flexibility of programming and the correlation in the phasing and decision-making process of the construction
  • Participants will examine best practices of steel construction, analyzing how existing and new structural systems are integrated successfully while showcasing the existing steel elements
  • Participants will evaluate the construction sequence for these two ongoing projects, understanding the impacts of the pandemic on the construction and the unique construction goals of this project
