PROGRAM:
Rules of Thumb is a general overview of basic engineering principles and concepts as they relate to the design of building structures. This program will explore many different structural systems and general rules of thumb to help aid in the preliminary design and layout of structures. Some of the structural systems covered in this presentation include structural steel, concrete, masonry and wood framing. The presentation will also address stresses on buildings due to vertical and horizontal loads, as well as special stresses that should be considered in building design. General rules of thumb are included throughout the presentation to help further assist designers.
