For countless reasons, mass timber in the United States is typically associated with the Pacific Northwest. And while it is true that most wood used for production of mass timber in North America comes from Canada and the Pacific Northwest, the southeast United States is emerging as a serious contender in the market, now contributing a significant proportion of the North American lumber used for mass timber. While the sourcing of mass timber from the southeast is important by itself, it matters just as much for major organizations to adopt mass timber construction within the region and across the country. This session will explain the timber supply chain, regional variation, manufacturing limitations, and the impacts on carbon emissions.
AIA Triangle Committee on the Environment COTE and USGBC Carolinas invite you to attend a panel discussion, tour, and social at the new office of DPR Construction. The office space was designed by Gensler and built by DPR Construction. It features an open workspace with daylighting from skylights and solar tubes as well as side lighting, training rooms, and meeting rooms within a warehouse space where DPR will do research and prefabrication of construction elements for projects in the region. The office is pursuing USGBC LEED Commercial Interiors and IWBI WELL certification. The building will also pursue LEED Zero Energy certification 12 months after the solar system is installed on the roof of the office space and the warehouse which will offset all the energy used in the building.
The AIA 2030 Commitment is an actionable climate strategy that gives us a set of standards and goals for reaching net zero emissions in the built environment. The latest climate data tells us that reducing carbon emissions is not enough. To make the biggest impact, we must all commit to net zero emissions by 2030—a path that requires strong, immediate action. Since the built environment creates a staggering 40% of the world’s emissions, architects, engineers, and owners play a key role.
Hear from architects representing a variety of firms about their experience with the AIA 2030 Commitment, the challenges they have faced, how they’ve overcome these hurdles, and what the future looks like to achieve this lofty goal.
This comprehensive course delves into the intricate details of the energy tax incentives provided by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), with a specific focus on their implications for architects, designers, […]
